Typical transit times: 2-4 days to Florida down I-95, 2-3 days to Chicago, 4-6 days to Texas, and 7-10 days to California. Upstate-to-downstate moves usually deliver in 1-2 days. Add a pickup window of a few days on each end while the carrier builds a full load.

At a wide, legal meeting point rather than your doorstep, because a full-size hauler cannot work a Manhattan block. Drivers use big-box lots, stadium parking, or staging areas just across the George Washington Bridge, and early-morning meets beat traffic. The inspection and paperwork happen exactly the same way; only the curb changes.

Yes. Every carrier we assign holds active cargo insurance that we verify, along with operating authority, before your car is loaded. Anything that happens on the truck, from a strap mark to winter road grime hiding a scratch, is judged against the bill of lading, so do the pickup inspection carefully even at a busy city meet-up point and photograph the car before it loads.

Plan on shipping the car empty. Carriers crossing into and out of the city stop overnight at truck stops where a packed back seat is an advertisement, and nothing inside the vehicle is covered by the carrier’s cargo policy. A single trunk-stowed soft bag under about 100 pounds is usually tolerated; anything more belongs with your household goods.

Book two to four weeks ahead for southbound moves between October and January, and closer to six weeks around the holidays, when demand out of metro New York peaks. Northbound in spring works the same way in reverse. Shipping against the flow, northbound in fall or southbound in spring, is the reliable way to save.

If you are driving to Florida anyway, maybe. The Auto Train runs nonstop from Lorton, Virginia to Sanford, Florida, but you ride with the train, pay per passenger plus the vehicle, and still have to get to Lorton, about four hours from the city. Door-to-door transport from your own driveway usually costs about the same and does not require the trip.

Take everything out of the car before the meet: boxes from the apartment, golf clubs headed south, electronics, and paperwork. Carrier cargo insurance covers the vehicle and not its contents, and loose items slide on the long run down I-95. If one soft bag must travel in the trunk, ask your coordinator first.

City grime and winter brine hide chips and scratches, so wash the car and photograph every panel, the wheels, the glass, and the roof in daylight the day before pickup. Time-stamped photos are the baseline for the inspection in Florida or wherever the car is headed, and they speed the driver’s report at a stadium lot.

Remove or bag your E-ZPass before loading. A live transponder riding an open carrier can rack up charges at every bridge, tunnel, and Thruway gantry the truck passes between pickup and delivery.

Leave the tank near a quarter full: enough to load, unload, and reach a station in Queens, Yonkers, or Albany, and nothing more. The hauler crosses bridges, tunnels, and Thruway gantries within the hour, and extra fuel is weight it does not need.

New York carriers will refuse a car with an active oil or coolant leak, since it drips onto the vehicle racked below. Have it repaired first. Northeast winters wear out marginal batteries, so test one that has been sitting in a garage, and warn your coordinator about a sticky parking brake, a sensitive alarm, or a manual gearbox.

Full-size haulers run 75 to 80 feet and cannot work Manhattan blocks, brownstone streets, or gated communities. Agree on a nearby wide lot, a big-box parking lot or stadium lot works well, and the handoff takes minutes.

Pickup requires an adult to release the keys and sign the bill of lading at the meeting point, and delivery requires an adult to inspect and sign. Metro New York snowbirds nearly always fly ahead of the car, so name a neighbor, community office, or relative at the Florida end when you book and send them your pickup photos.
