Q: How much does it cost to ship a car from California to New York?

Our own book since 2023 holds 30 California to New York open-carrier car orders, and the middle half of them ran $1,600 to $2,000, the median sitting just under the top of that range. Q: Should the car go east in a trailer?

Q: When does the eastbound lane get busy?

May has been our busiest booking month on this lane since 2023, with April behind it. The May cars are the summer people: Southampton, Westhampton Beach and Hampton Bays appear in our deliveries mostly between late April and June, along with graduates leaving the UC campuses for a first job in Brooklyn. The ten-day median wait was earned in those weeks, when everyone in the basin wants the same eastbound trailer. Book a May pickup in April, give the driver a three to five day window, and it moves; a fixed date on the twentieth booked on the fifteenth does not.

Q: Can a pickup truck or a dune buggy go on this lane?

Both have, on an open carrier: a 2021 F-150 from Los Angeles to Southampton, a 1976 Chevrolet K20, and a 1963 Volkswagen dune buggy from Chico that did not run and was winched aboard. A full-size pickup takes more deck and axle weight and prices at the top of the band or above; a non-runner needs a carrier with a winch and a note on the order before dispatch, not on the day. We open the Southampton house in June. When should the car leave Los Angeles?

Book in April for a pickup in the first half of May with a window of three to five days, and expect the car on the East End around the end of the month. May is our busiest month eastbound and the Hamptons deliveries in our file cluster in May and June, so the people who book on the first of May for the tenth meet the fourteen-day tail. The East End pickup is easy on the California side; the delivery is a Sunrise Highway or Montauk Highway handover, since a hauler cannot use the parkways. What does New York need from me when the car arrives?

A New York insurance policy before the DMV will register the car, and a New York safety and emissions inspection shortly after registration. Neither affects the shipment, but the timing matters: arrange the New York insurance while the car is on the truck so that the registration and inspection can follow within days of delivery, and keep the California title and registration in the car’s folder, not in the glove box, since documents inside the car are not covered.

The car is at a dealer in Irvine and I am in New York. Can you collect it without me?

Yes. Give the coordinator the dealer’s contact and the stock or VIN number, and the driver arranges the pickup with the dealer directly and completes the inspection report with the dealer’s staff; you receive the report and the driver’s number the same day. Ask the dealer to have the car released, fueled to about a quarter and with the keys and both fobs in an envelope. At the New York end you or a named person with photo ID meets the truck.

Will nine days of desert and Midwestern weather harm the car on an open deck?

For an ordinary car, no: it collects road dust, occasional rain and, in summer, a lot of sun, all of which a wash removes. The cases that argue for a trailer are a soft top with a worn seam, fresh or delicate paint, a convertible with the top down, and a car going to a buyer who expects it detailed. Every car on this lane in our file went open and arrived; the decision is about the car, not the road, and the coordinator will tell you which side of the line yours falls on.

Twentynine Palms to Fort Drum. Any military reduction?

A $25 military reduction comes off the quote for serving members and veterans; mention it when you book. Camp Pendleton, Twentynine Palms, Naval Base San Diego and Travis to Fort Drum, West Point or the Long Island reserve centers are runs we have made. On the California side the driver meets you outside the gate unless a sponsor escorts him in; on the New York side Fort Drum is a short run off Interstate 81 and the delivery is straightforward once the gate is arranged.

Should I remove the FasTrak before the truck comes?

Yes, or seal it in its bag. A car on a trailer passes the toll gantries on Interstate 15, the Oklahoma turnpikes, the Pennsylvania and New Jersey turnpikes and the George Washington Bridge, and a live FasTrak or E-ZPass on the windshield can be read at each and billed to you. The carrier pays its own tolls and they are already inside the rate; nothing from the trip should appear on your toll account.

What do I pay, and when?

Two amounts, neither before a truck is found. The broker portion is charged when a carrier accepts your California to New York dates and you have its name and window in writing; the carrier’s share goes to the driver at delivery in New York by card, cash or certified funds as your coordinator confirms before dispatch. Nothing about your car changes that, but your booking date can: three weeks of notice turns a ten-day wait into a non-event.

Every Eastbound Car Went Open

All 15 of the California to New York moves we have dispatched since 2023 went on an open carrier, a Land Rover Defender, a Mustang, a Volvo XC40 and two Subaru Outbacks among them, and none of the thirty open-carrier bookings behind the band asked for a trailer either. The Hamptons Set the Calendar

Southampton, Westhampton Beach, Hampton Bays and Atlantic Beach appear among our eastbound deliveries, and three of the four were booked between late April and early June, when the summer houses open. Add the graduates leaving the University of California for Brooklyn in the same weeks and you have the reason May is our busiest month on this lane and April is second, with a wait that runs to a fortnight for anyone who books late. The rest of the year the eastbound trucks have room. If your car can travel in early May instead of the last week, or in June instead of May, the difference in the wait is several days and the difference in the quote is real.

The Desert Road Is Open All Year

Eastbound trucks out of Los Angeles take Interstate 40 through Flagstaff, Albuquerque and Amarillo rather than the mountain routes, because it is the road that never closes. Interstate 80 over Donner Pass and Interstate 70 through the Colorado Rockies both restrict or shut to loaded haulers in winter storms; Interstate 40 climbs to 7,000 feet at Flagstaff and is cleared within hours. The consequence for a shipper is that a January move from California to New York is as reliable as a July one, which is not true of the reverse direction from the Bay Area. The only seasonal risk on this lane is demand in May, not weather in January.
