Inoperable Vehicle Shipping: Moving a Car That Does Not Run

A car that will not start is still a car that has to get somewhere. It might be a project sitting in a garage that is finally moving to a new shop, a barn find bought sight unseen three states away, an accident vehicle going to a body shop, an estate car that has not turned over in a decade, or a daily driver that dropped a transmission the week before a relocation. Ship A Car, Inc. arranges inoperable vehicle transport nationwide, and it is a routine part of our book rather than an exception we grudgingly accommodate.

The one thing that decides everything is how the vehicle loads. A car that rolls, steers, and brakes can be winched onto a carrier by a driver with the right equipment. A car missing any of those three needs a different plan, and sometimes different equipment entirely. Tell us the truth about the vehicle at quote time and the shipment is straightforward. Discover it at pickup and the driver often cannot take it, which is the single most common way an inoperable move goes wrong. Call (866) 821-4555 or describe the car in our quote calculator for an estimate by email. A transport specialist then calls to confirm the final price and how the car will load.

Here’s Why SAC is the Smart Choice for Inoperable Vehicle Shipping

We Match the Equipment to the Vehicle, Not the Other Way Around

A non-running car is an equipment problem before it is a trucking problem. A vehicle that rolls and steers needs a carrier with a working winch. A vehicle with seized wheels, no steering, or a missing drivetrain may need a rollback, skates, or a forklift at one or both ends. We establish which of those applies during the quote, then dispatch a carrier who actually has that equipment on the truck. That is why our inoperable shipments load on the first attempt.

Honest Pricing on a Job Most Brokers Treat as an Exception

Inoperable vehicles are a normal, recurring part of what we move, not a favor. In our own orders since 2023, the middle half of these moves ran $450 to $700 under 500 miles and $1,500 to $2,050 beyond 1,500 miles, and the drivers of those bands are distance, route density, and loading equipment. We quote the surcharge for winch loading up front as part of the price rather than adding it after a carrier has been assigned.

Project Cars, Barn Finds, and Estate Vehicles Are Familiar Ground

A car that has sat for years has its own problems: flat spotted tires, a seized handbrake, a fuel tank full of varnish, wasps in the intake. Those affect loading, not just running. We ask about them because a driver who arrives expecting to roll a car onto a trailer and finds four locked wheels will leave without it. Classic and collector vehicles that do not run can also travel enclosed transport where the condition warrants it.

A non-running car is priced on the same fundamentals as any other shipment, plus the cost of getting it onto and off the trailer. These are the factors that actually change the figure, in the order they matter.

1. Whether It Rolls, Steers, and Brakes

2. Distance and Route Density

3. The Loading Equipment Required

4. Vehicle Size, Weight, and Completeness

5. Open or Enclosed Transport

How Condition Changes an Inoperable Quote

Across our own orders for non-running cars since 2023, the middle half came in between $750 and $1,400 on any carrier and $1,100 to $1,950 on an enclosed one. Where a specific car lands depends far more on the row it sits in below, and on the distance, than on the plain fact that it will not start.

The rows carry no prices: they show how condition decides the loading method and how many carriers can take the car, which is what moves a non-running car within the bands above, along with distance and season. Every band on this page is the middle half of our own orders for non-running cars since 2023. Call (866) 821-4555, or tell our quote calculator whether the car rolls, steers and brakes to get an estimate by email. A transport specialist then phones to confirm the final price before a carrier is assigned.

Preparing a Non-Running Vehicle for Pickup

Preparation matters more on an inoperable move than a running one, because the driver has fewer options if something is not as described. Twenty minutes of work before pickup day prevents almost every problem we see.

1. Answer the Three Questions Honestly Before You Book

Does it roll, does it steer, does it brake. Check them physically rather than assuming. Put the car in neutral and see whether it moves. Turn the wheel and see whether the front wheels follow. A vehicle that has sat for years often fails one of these without the owner realizing, usually because the handbrake has seized or a caliper has rusted solid. Finding that out yourself is free. Finding it out when the driver arrives is not.

2. Make Sure the Steering Is Unlocked and Accessible

A winch pulls the car up the ramps, but someone has to guide the front wheels. If the steering column locks and there is no key, say so at quote time. The same applies where the interior is stripped and there is no seat to sit in while steering. These are solvable problems when known in advance and shipment ending problems when they are not.

3. Photograph the Vehicle From Every Angle

Take time stamped photographs of all four sides, the roof, the wheels, the interior, and any existing damage. This matters more for a non-running car than a running one, because these vehicles often already carry damage, rust, or missing parts, and a clear record at pickup prevents any dispute about what happened in transit. Include a photograph of each wheel showing whether the tires hold air.

4. Clear a Path for the Winch and the Truck

The carrier needs a straight pull of thirty feet or more and firm ground to work on. Move anything parked in front of the vehicle, clear the garage doorway, and think about whether the ground is solid enough for a loaded trailer. Cars in backyards, on soft grass, or boxed in behind other vehicles are a common reason an inoperable pickup fails.

5. Fit or Note the Tow Hooks and Attachment Points

A winch cable attaches to the frame or to factory tow points. If the vehicle has removable tow hooks, fit them and leave them in place. If the front end is damaged or the attachment points are missing, tell your coordinator so the driver can plan a safe alternative rather than improvising with a strap around a suspension arm.

6. Remove Personal Items and Loose Parts

Personal belongings are not covered by carrier cargo insurance. Loose parts are a particular issue on project cars: a trunk full of brackets, a bumper resting on the back seat, or a spare engine block will shift in transit and can damage the vehicle or the trailer. Bag and secure small parts or ship them separately.

7. Leave a Small Amount of Fuel and Disconnect Nothing You Need

If the car may start at the other end, leave roughly a quarter tank. If it definitely will not, a nearly empty tank reduces weight and fire risk. Do not disconnect the battery unless asked, because some vehicles need power for the steering lock or the transmission to release into neutral.

The Three Questions That Decide Everything

Dispatchers do not ask whether the engine turns over. They ask whether the vehicle rolls, steers, and brakes, because those three determine what equipment is needed to get it onto a trailer. A car that fails to start but satisfies all three is the simplest kind of inoperable shipment and moves on ordinary equipment with a winch. Lose the steering and the job needs skates or a rollback. Lose the wheels entirely and it becomes a forklift or a flatbed job. Answering those three honestly at quote time is the single most useful thing an owner can do, and our guide on how to ship a non-running car walks through how to check each one.

Why the Carrier Pool Is Smaller

Winches are common but not universal, and a driver without one simply cannot take your vehicle no matter how good the rate is. That single fact explains most of what feels different about booking an inoperable move: fewer trucks qualify, so matching takes longer, particularly away from major corridors. The practical response is lead time. A week of flexibility gives a winch-equipped carrier room to fit your vehicle into its route, and that can shorten the wait for pickup.

Project Cars, Barn Finds, and Long Term Storage

Vehicles that have not moved in years behave differently from vehicles that simply will not start. Tires develop flat spots or lose their beads, brakes seize to the drums, handbrake cables rust solid, and fuel turns to varnish. None of that stops the car being shipped, but all of it affects loading, so it belongs in the conversation before dispatch. Where the vehicle is a restoration candidate or has value beyond its running condition, classic car shipping and covered transport are worth considering. See also shipping a classic car that does not run.

Non-Running Cars Inside a Larger Move

Inoperable vehicles frequently travel as part of something bigger: a household relocation where one car is a project, an estate where a vehicle has sat since the owner stopped driving, or a collection being consolidated. A non-runner can be included in a multi-car shipping booking with the rest of the group, provided the carrier assigned has the equipment for it. Flagging that vehicle early is what keeps the whole load on schedule, because one undisclosed non-runner can leave a driver unable to complete any of the pickups.
