Ocean freight operators and port handlers have strict policies regarding active fluid leaks. A vehicle leaking oil, coolant, transmission fluid, or fuel may be refused for loading at the port. Before mainland pickup, inspect your vehicle for any drips and address them or disclose them to your SAC coordinator in advance.

Also ensure the vehicle starts reliably and can be driven onto and off of loading ramps under its own power. Non-running vehicles require specialized port handling that must be pre-arranged and may significantly affect your transport timeline. Disclose any mechanical issues when booking, not on the day the carrier arrives.

Disable any aftermarket alarm or motion-sensitive security system before transport. Ocean voyage vibrations, port handling equipment, and vessel movement during the crossing can trigger sensitive alarm systems repeatedly over multiple days at sea. A triggered alarm that cannot be shut off creates serious complications on the vessel and at port arrival.

If you have a factory-standard alarm that deactivates with the key fob, this is generally not a concern for the ocean leg. The issue is primarily with aftermarket systems sensitive to vibration and motion. If you have any uncertainty about your alarm system, discuss it with your SAC coordinator before mainland pickup so the right precautions can be communicated to all parties in the transport chain.

Before mainland pickup, remove any loose or non-permanently attached exterior components. This includes removable roof racks, external antennas that are not flush-mounted, detachable spoilers or splitters, and any accessories that extend beyond the vehicle’s standard profile. Port handling equipment and vessel loading can put stress on exposed components.

For convertibles, ensure the roof is fully closed and latched before handoff. For trucks with tonneau covers, confirm they are securely fastened. For vehicles with aftermarket body kits or wide-body panels, inform your SAC coordinator of any clearance or handling considerations before booking so the right carrier and port handling instructions are in place before your vehicle ever leaves your door.
