New York to California Car Shipping

Our own book since 2023 holds 20 New York to California open-carrier car orders, and the middle half of them ran $1,500 to $1,850, with the median a little above the bottom of that range. Spread over roughly 2,800 road miles that is under 70 cents a mile, the lowest per-mile figure of any lane we publish, because a truck loading in New York for Los Angeles is filling every slot for the same destination. A Crosstrek, a Jetta or a Prius sits low in the band; a BMW X6, a QX60 or an Escalade sits at the top or above it. Enclosed transport on this lane runs about a third more, and we have moved enough collector cars inside a trailer to say that from experience rather than a rule of thumb.

Three days to find the truck, then a week or so on the road. Across the New York to California moves we have dispatched since 2023, the median wait from booking to a named carrier was 3 days, and a quarter of the orders waited 7 days or more. Once loaded, a mixed load crossing 2,800 miles with drops in Chicago, Denver or Las Vegas on the way usually takes seven to ten days from a New York pickup to a California delivery, faster when the trailer is filled for Los Angeles alone. That road figure is an estimate for the distance; what our file records is the day the carrier was assigned, not the day it arrived.

Two, depending on the season and the drop. In the warm months a Los Angeles load goes Interstate 80 to Interstate 76 and Interstate 70 across Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana, then Interstate 70 through Kansas City and Denver, Interstate 15 to Las Vegas and Interstate 15 down to Barstow and the basin; a Bay Area or Sacramento load stays on Interstate 80 the whole way over Donner Pass. From November to March, when the Rockies and the Sierra close their passes to a loaded hauler, the same trucks drop south to Interstate 40 at Oklahoma City and cross Amarillo, Albuquerque and Flagstaff, entering California at Needles. Upstate cars from Ithaca, Syracuse or Buffalo join the westbound flow by way of the Thruway and Interstate 90 through Cleveland and Chicago.

For the right car, yes, and on this lane a surprising number qualify: of the 15 New York to California moves we have dispatched since 2023, 4 went enclosed, among them a Porsche 911 from Mineola to Los Angeles, a 1978 Fiat Spider from Southampton and a 1971 Land Cruiser from Long Island City. Nine days of interstate grit, a Wyoming hailstorm or a desert sandblast are a real risk to paint and soft tops over 2,800 miles, and the trailer costs about a third more. For a Crosstrek or a Jetta the open deck is fine and the coordinator will tell you so.

The pickups on this lane come from everywhere in the state, a car at a time: Lido Beach, Mineola, Long Island City, Port Jefferson, East Setauket, Hampton Bays and Southampton on the Island; Brooklyn and the Bronx; New Rochelle and Croton-on-Hudson up the river; and Ithaca, Fayetteville and Orchard Park upstate. The deliveries cluster: Los Angeles is the destination for a third of our westbound cars, then San Diego and Vista in the south, Malibu, Ojai, San Juan Capistrano and Trabuco Canyon along the coast, and San Francisco, Walnut Creek and Sacramento in the north. Rancho Mirage in the desert appears more than once.

August and September have been our busiest booking months westbound since 2023, with July and the last three months of the year close behind, and the pattern is the end of summer rather than the start of winter. Hamptons houses close, students head for the University of California campuses, and families who took a job in Los Angeles over the summer finally send the car. Even in those weeks the three-day median wait held, because the westbound trucks want the load. The quiet months are February and March, when the mountain routes are at their worst and few people move.

Both, and this lane has seen both at once: a 1975 Triumph TR6 with a 1965 Volvo 1800S from Croton-on-Hudson to Los Angeles, and a 2008 Porsche with a new Defender from Ithaca to Malibu, each pair on one order. The second car shares the trailer and the dispatch and pays an incremental rate. A classic that runs is quoted like any car with its year and model; one that does not needs a winch truck and says so at quote time.
