The Salt City at the Crossroads
Syracuse made its fortune twice from geography: first mining the salt springs of Onondaga Lake, then working the Erie Canal that ran straight through Clinton Square. The canal is paved now, but the crossroads instinct survives, with I-81 and the Thruway crossing at the city the way the canal and turnpikes once did.
