The Huguenots' Harbor
New Rochelle was founded by French Huguenot refugees in the 1680s and named for La Rochelle, the port they left behind. More than three centuries later the city still faces the water: nine miles of Long Island Sound shoreline, island parks, and harbor neighborhoods that feel far calmer than a thirty-five minute train ride from Grand Central should allow.
