The City the Racetrack Built
Hialeah grew up around Hialeah Park, the 1920s racetrack whose Mediterranean grandstand and flamingo infield made it one of the most famous sporting venues in America. The park still stands on the National Register, and the city around it became something rarer: one of the densest, hardest-working big cities in Florida, where the streets fill with real life rather than tourists.
