What Affects the Cost of Shipping?
Season

The time of the year affects your shipping quotes. Auto transport companies usually get a lot of business during certain periods of the year, particularly the summer. A lot of people tend to ship their vehicles during favorable weather conditions. Families also schedule moving to coincide with the new school year. The increase in demand tends to increase shipping costs.

Distance and Location of Pick-up and Delivery

Distance plays a major role in the cost of shipping. The farther the distance the higher the shipping quote and vice versa. It is cheaper to transport vehicles within a state than across the country. There are two options when it comes to where you want your vehicle delivered. With the door-to-door option, your vehicle would be picked up from the agreed location and delivered to your address in Oregon. If you choose the terminal-to-terminal option, you have to drop your car at the shipping terminal and pick it up when it gets delivered to Oregon.

Delivery Schedule

The time frame of delivery influences how much you’ll have to pay for shipping. You should expect to pay more if you request expedited shipping.

Type of Auto Carrier Used

There are two major types of auto transport carriers: Open auto carriers and enclosed auto carriers

  1. Open Auto Carriers: This is the standard auto carrier used and it is readily available in most shipping companies. Your vehicle would be fastened safely to the back of an open trailer. It is an economical option, and several vehicles and be transported at once depending on their size. The downside is the fact that your vehicle would be exposed to road debris.
  2. Enclosed Auto Carriers: This option shields your vehicle from the elements and it is a suitable option for high-end vehicles like luxurious cars and classics. It is relatively more expensive.

Type of Vehicle

It is cheaper to transport cost a relatively small car than a large vehicle. Larger vehicles take up more space and affect fuel consumption.

The Oregon state of the United States has a significant rail transportation network. Oregon has had some type of rail transportation since 1855, and the state was a pioneer in the creation of electric railway lines. Rail remains a vital way of transporting people and goods both inside the state and to locations outside its borders, despite the fact that the vehicle has replaced many uses of rail in the state (as elsewhere).

Freight rail:  Two Class 1 railways, the BNSF Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad (UP), now provide service to Oregon. The Southern Pacific Transportation Company also serviced Oregon until the UP acquired it in 1996; the UP still uses rails that it bought from the SP.

The United States state of Oregon owns and maintains the sections of the national United States Numbered Highways System that are known as the United States Numbered Highways in Oregon. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is responsible for the system’s national standards and numbering, while the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is in charge of maintaining the state’s roadways.

The 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or more of state highways—roadways that ODOT owns and maintains—make up the state highway system. This amount decreases to around 7,400 miles (11,900 km), or about 9% of the state’s total road mileage, when minor connections and frontage roads are eliminated. The overall length of Oregon’s section of the I-95 is 729.57 miles (1,174.13 kilometers). The Oregon Transportation Commission (OTC), a five-member body that the governor appoints and has monthly meetings, must approve any transfers of roadways between the state and county or local maintenance. Because of these transfers, local governments frequently preserve all or part of a major route inside their jurisdiction.

There are two different numbering systems in use: the public routes, such Interstate 84, U.S. Route 26, and Oregon Route 140, have shields that are displayed on road signs and maps. These include the Interstate Highways, U.S. Highways, and state highways in Oregon (such OR 201, for example). On the other side, ODOT uses highways internally; they are called and numbered (for example, Pacific Highway No. 1, Willamette Highway No. 18). Although they mostly overlap, the two systems are incompatible. Many routes are marked on city and county-maintained roadways and are not at all a part of the state highway system. For instance, OR 8’s eastern and westernmost sections, Canyon Road and Gales Creek Road, are not state roads.

The Beaverton-Tualatin Highway No. 141, for example, has an official route designation (OR 141), but is otherwise completely unmarked. On the other side, other state roads are not even marked as routes. As an example, OR 47 is superimposed over the Mist-Clatskanie Highway No. 110, Nehalem Highway No. 102, and Tualatin Valley Highway No. 29. Signed routes can also include several roads. Highways can also be made up of many routes; for example, OR 8 and OR 47 are partially connected by Tualatin Valley Highway No. 29. Every route is at least partially maintained by the state, while every highway is entirely maintained by the state.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) must also approve any U.S. Route or Interstate numbers before the OTC may define the courses of these routes, which often follow state highways and local roads. The organization that maintains the roads that the route signs are displayed along also does so. If a local government keeps a numbered route up and running, it enters into a contract with the state to keep the signs up, preserving the route for the benefit of drivers.

I was disappointed to see some very low ratings on Yelp about this company. I spoke with Steve and a guy named Mike transported my 2 cars from California to New Orleans. My driver's name was Mike and he called me every day to let me know where he was in his transport. The cars arrived in pristine condition and very timely. I guess everyone's experience is different...but I got all-star treatment.

I moved from NJ to OR and had to ship my 2 cars. I was flying out on Sunday 8/29 and as requested I gave them a 3 days window - Thursday 25th through Saturday 28th - for the pick up to match my travel schedule. Since the first call I told them that I was moving on Sunday and they assured me that they could pick them up on the window given. They didn't show up until Sunday a couple hours before I had to leave to the airport. It was a bit of stress for me which could have been avoided if they had shown up within the 3 days window I had given. However, besides that all went well. Cars arrived in 6 days which was less than they had estimated (7-10 days). I recommend using Ship a Car but if you have planned travels I suggest you consider at least a 5 days windows before your travel date.
