North Carolina to California Car Shipping

Our own bookings put the middle half of our North Carolina to California open-carrier car orders since 2023 at $1,500 to $1,700, for an ordinary car, pickup or SUV on an open carrier. Over roughly 2,300 to 3,000 road miles it comes to between about 50 and 75 cents a mile, cheap per mile because the distance spreads the truck’s fixed costs thin. A covered trailer runs about a third higher than open, and with no enclosed bookings westbound there is no band of our own for it.

Allow about a week from booking to a named carrier; that was typical here, and most of our orders had their truck within seven days. On the road, a coast-to-coast run like this is usually five to eight days depending on the stops the driver makes and how far past Barstow your California address sits. The waits are measured from our dispatch records; the road days are an estimate for the distance.

Interstate 40 west through Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Albuquerque and Flagstaff to Barstow, then Interstate 15 into the Inland Empire and Los Angeles or San Diego. Bay Area and Santa Cruz loads leave at Barstow for Bakersfield and the Central Valley. Winter storms over the high ground near Flagstaff can hold a truck for a day, and since Hurricane Helene damaged Interstate 40 in the Pigeon River Gorge in 2024, drivers leaving the mountains check that stretch before choosing it.

Rarely necessary. Every car we have dispatched on this lane went open, the classic Ford pickups included. All over the state: Manns Harbor near the Outer Banks, Winnabow below Wilmington, Holly Ridge beside Camp Lejeune, Fayetteville, Marshville east of Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Asheville. In California the cars went to Commerce in Los Angeles County, San Diego and Escondido in the south and Santa Cruz and Petaluma in the north, and some stopped at the Long Beach port yard to sail on to Hawaii. Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro and Charlotte are served the same way.

April and August have been the busiest booking months on this lane since 2023, with orders in winter and fall as well. Summer is when most households and service members change coasts, so book a June, July or August move a few weeks ahead and give a pickup window of several days.

Yes. A move between Camp Lejeune, Fort Bragg, Seymour Johnson or Cherry Point and Camp Pendleton, Twentynine Palms, Miramar, Naval Base San Diego or Edwards is booked like any other; the driver usually meets you outside the gate unless a sponsor escorts the truck.
