California to North Carolina Car Shipping

In our book since 2023, the middle half of California to North Carolina open-carrier car orders ran $1,400 to $1,900, with the typical order close to the middle. Over roughly 2,300 to 2,900 road miles that works out to about 50 to 80 cents a mile. Road legs from the Long Beach port yard sat in the lower half, and deliveries to the mountains and the coast near the top. An enclosed trailer costs about a third more than open transport.

A car that is ready when you book can expect a carrier within a day; every such car of ours had one. Cars booked ahead, a San Jose move set up ten weeks early or a Hawaii car still waiting for its sailing, were dispatched in time for their ready dates. Once loaded, the drive across usually takes five to eight days, which is our estimate for the distance and not a figure from our records.

From Southern California the usual line is Interstate 15 over the Cajon Pass to Barstow and Interstate 40 east through Arizona, New Mexico, the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Tennessee into North Carolina. Charlotte loads leave Interstate 40 at Statesville for Interstate 77, Fayetteville loads continue toward Interstate 95, and Durham and Chapel Hill sit right on the main line. A Bay Area or Sacramento Valley car usually comes down the Central Valley to join it.

Rarely. Most of our California cars rode an open deck; an exception was a Porsche 911 convertible that went from Costa Mesa to Chapel Hill in December. Choose an enclosed carrier for a collector car, a lowered car or a finish you want protected from road grit, and budget about a third more than the open band.

Home pickups in our file came from Los Angeles, Costa Mesa, Rancho Cucamonga, San Jose and Willows, alongside the Hawaii cars collected at Long Beach. Charlotte is the most frequent destination, then Fayetteville, with Durham, Chapel Hill and Kernersville in the Triad and Triangle. San Diego, Sacramento, Fresno and the rest of the state are served the same way, and anywhere in North Carolina can be a drop.

August has been the busiest booking month on this lane, and December the next. August brings the start of the school year in Durham, Chapel Hill and Charlotte and the height of summer relocations; December brings year-end moves. In either month, a booking made a few weeks out with a window of several days holds its price best.
