Gas vs Electric: What Fueling Actually Costs Per Mile
Every comparison of gas and electric fueling costs that quotes this month’s prices is wrong within a quarter. What stays true is the arithmetic - and once you know it, you can run the comparison yourself with your own local numbers any time, which is the only version that matters.
Here is the per-mile math for both, the two splits that decide the electric answer, and where each side genuinely wins.

The Per-Mile Arithmetic
Gasoline first, because everyone half-knows it: price per gallon divided by miles per gallon. A 30 mpg car at four-dollar gas costs about 13 cents a mile; the same car at three dollars costs 10. Simple, visible on every corner sign, and it moves with the crude market.
Electric: price per kilowatt-hour divided by miles per kilowatt-hour. An efficient EV covers 3 to 4 miles per kWh. At a home overnight rate around 12 to 15 cents, that is 3 to 5 cents a mile - the number that makes EV commuting the cheapest driving available. At a DC fast charger billing 40 to 60 cents per kWh, the same car costs 12 to 20 cents a mile, which is gas territory and sometimes worse.
That spread is the entire story, and it is the part most buyers never hear before the first road trip bill arrives: electricity is not one price. Gasoline varies maybe 40 percent across the country; electric fueling varies 400 percent depending on where you plug in.
A worked example makes the method concrete. Take a 30 mpg gas sedan against an EV doing 3.5 miles per kWh, in a town with $3.50 gas, a 13-cent overnight rate and 50-cent fast charging. The gas car: 11.7 cents a mile, every mile. The EV at home: 3.7 cents. The EV on the interstate: 14.3 cents. A 12,000-mile year that is 90 percent local costs the gas car about $1,400 and the home-charged EV about $520 - and if that same EV lived entirely on fast chargers, roughly $1,660. Same car, same year, a $1,100 swing on nothing but where it plugs in.
The Two Splits That Decide It
Home versus public charging. An EV charged overnight at home wins the cost comparison decisively, in every state, at any recent gas price. An EV that lives on public fast charging - because there is no driveway, no garage, no workplace charger - fights gas to roughly a draw. This is why the honest first question for an EV buyer is not range; it is “where will it charge at night?”
Commuting versus road trips. Daily miles happen at the home rate; road trip miles happen at the fast-charge rate. A household doing 12,000 commuting miles and one annual long trip pays the cheap rate for 90 percent of its driving. A frequent long-distance driver pays the expensive rate for much more of it, and the advantage narrows accordingly.

What the Simple Math Leaves Out
Four adjustments, two in each direction.
Winter costs the EV more. Cold reduces range 20 to 40 percent depending on the car and whether it has a heat pump, and lost range is a fueling cost in disguise. Gas cars lose winter efficiency too, but far less.
Time-of-use rates help the EV more. Many utilities sell overnight electricity at a discount specifically for EV charging, and several rebate home charger installation - usually requiring pre-approval rather than a receipt afterward. Road taxes are converging. Gasoline carries federal and state fuel taxes that fund roads; a growing number of states recover the equivalent from EVs through registration surcharges. That levels a slice of the advantage and it belongs in the comparison.
Maintenance rides along. Not fueling, strictly - but the oil changes a gas car needs are a per-mile cost the EV does not carry, and honest comparisons count it.
Running Your Own Numbers
Three figures from your own life beat any national average: your electric rate (the overnight rate if your utility has one), your local gas price, and the actual efficiency of the two vehicles you are comparing - window-sticker mpg against real-world miles per kWh from owner data, not the lab figure.
Then weight the result by your split: what share of your miles are daily-local versus long-distance. That one adjustment is what most published comparisons skip, and it is where most households discover the EV case is either stronger or weaker than the headlines told them.

Where Transport Meets the Comparison
Fueling economics is a common reason people buy the EV out of state - inventory and pricing vary sharply by region - and the transport has two EV-specific notes. Weight: an EV runs several hundred pounds heavier than its gas equivalent, and a trailer has a legal limit, so declare that the vehicle is electric. Charge: carriers prefer mid-level, not full or empty, and if the car has a transport mode or cannot roll in neutral, write the procedure down and hand it over with the key.
