The Jeep Avenger 4×4: The Electric Jeep America Does Not Get

The Avenger is Jeep’s small electric SUV, and it is not sold in the United States. It was designed for European cities, built on a platform shared with Stellantis siblings sold there, and its 4×4 version uses a second motor on the rear axle rather than a driveshaft.

That last detail is the interesting part, because it is the layout that will define small electric four wheel drive vehicles in the American market too. Here is what the Avenger actually is, why it is not here, and what it signals about what is.

What the Vehicle Is

A subcompact crossover, considerably smaller than anything Jeep sells in America. Think of the footprint of a small European hatchback rather than a Compass, let alone a Grand Cherokee.

It launched as a front wheel drive electric vehicle, with combustion and mild hybrid versions added for markets where charging infrastructure is thinner. The 4×4 version is the one that got attention, because it addresses the obvious objection to a Jeep with driven front wheels only.

How Electric Four Wheel Drive Works

This is worth understanding because it applies to almost every electric all wheel drive vehicle now on sale, American ones included.

A conventional four wheel drive vehicle has one engine, a transfer case, and a driveshaft running the length of the car to send torque to the other axle. It is mechanical, heavy, and takes up space in the floor.

An electric one simply adds a second motor at the other axle. There is no driveshaft, no transfer case and no mechanical connection between front and rear at all. The two axles are coordinated by software, which decides how much torque each gets, thousands of times a second.

The advantages are real. Response is faster than any mechanical system, because an electric motor delivers torque essentially instantly. The system can send torque to a wheel with grip while cutting it to one without, without waiting for a differential to react. And packaging improves, because the tunnel a driveshaft needed is gone.

The trade offs are also real. A second motor adds weight and cost, it consumes range, and traditional low range gearing for slow technical off road work is generally absent. Software torque control substitutes for it, and for most conditions that is enough.

Why It Is Not Sold Here

Three reasons, none of them about the vehicle’s quality.

Size. American buyers have moved consistently toward larger vehicles, and the segment the Avenger sits in barely exists here. Manufacturers have withdrawn subcompact models from the US market repeatedly for exactly this reason.

Federal requirements. Bringing a vehicle designed for European regulations to the United States means meeting a different set of federal safety and emissions standards. That is engineering and certification work, and it is only worth doing for a model expected to sell in volume.

Brand positioning. Jeep in America means capability, size and towing. A subcompact urban electric crossover does not fit that, and the company has been explicit about targeting different segments in different regions.

Can You Import One?

Practically, no, and this is worth saying plainly because it comes up.

A vehicle not certified for the United States generally cannot be imported and registered for road use until it is 25 years old, under the long standing federal exemption. There are narrow exceptions, including show and display and certain research uses, and they are narrow.

So the Avenger is not a vehicle an American buyer can realistically acquire. If you have seen it and want something like it, the useful question is which US market vehicles use the same dual motor layout, and several do.

What It Signals for the American Market

The dual motor approach is the part that transfers, and it already has.

Electric pickups, electric SUVs and performance electric sedans sold in the United States overwhelmingly use a motor per axle rather than a mechanical connection. The engineering conversation about whether software torque control can substitute for a locking differential and low range is an active one, and the answer so far is that it handles most conditions well and serious rock crawling less well.

The other transferable point is the platform strategy. Building electric and combustion versions of the same vehicle on one architecture lets a manufacturer sell into markets with very different charging infrastructure, and that flexibility is why several US market vehicles now exist in both forms.

If You Are Shipping a Small Electric SUV

Whatever the badge, dual motor electric vehicles share a few transport characteristics worth declaring at booking.

They are heavier than the equivalent combustion vehicle, often by several hundred pounds, because of the battery pack. On a trailer with a legal weight limit that matters, so say the vehicle is electric when you book.

Carriers generally prefer a charge somewhere in the middle rather than full or empty. And some electric vehicles cannot be put in neutral and rolled the way a combustion car can, which changes how they are loaded, so if yours has a specific procedure for towing or moving, write it down and hand it over with the key.
