How to Ship an Agricultural Robot

An agricultural robot is a machine that is light, expensive, full of sensors and almost never covered by the assumptions a carrier makes about farm equipment. A tractor can be chained down hard and driven up a ramp. An autonomous weeder or a robotic harvester frequently cannot be treated that way at all, and the failure mode is a calibration problem that only appears when the thing reaches the field.

Establish What You Actually Have

The category covers machines that have almost nothing in common, so specifics matter more than usual.

Small autonomous field units, the weeding and scouting robots, are frequently only a few hundred to a couple of thousand pounds and travel crated on a flatbed or even in a van. Robotic milking and feeding systems are building installations that ship as sections. Autonomous or retrofit-autonomous tractors are ordinary heavy equipment with an expensive electronics package bolted on. Drone and sensor platforms are essentially freight rather than machinery.

Give the manufacturer, the model, the crated dimensions and the actual weight from documentation. A quote based on the word “robot” is a quote that will change.

The Sensors Are the Fragile Part

This is the difference from ordinary equipment transport and it is worth being blunt about.

These machines navigate using GPS receivers, cameras, lidar units and inertial sensors, mounted on masts and brackets that were designed to survive field vibration rather than a chain binder or a forklift. Knocking one out of alignment does not necessarily break it. It makes it wrong, which is worse, because the machine will operate and produce bad results until somebody works out why.

Where sensor heads and masts are removable, remove them and crate them separately. Where they are not, they need physical protection and the carrier needs to know they are there. Photograph their mounting positions before anything is disturbed, because that is what re-installation depends on.

Ask the manufacturer whether the machine needs recalibration after transport. On many of these it does, and knowing that in advance turns a surprise into a scheduled task.

Batteries and Power Systems

A large share of these machines are battery electric, and that brings shipping rules with it.

Large lithium batteries are regulated in transit. Depending on the chemistry, capacity and configuration, there may be requirements about state of charge, packaging, labeling and documentation, and some carriers will not take them at all. This is not a formality; it is the thing most likely to stop a shipment.

Establish with the manufacturer whether the battery ships installed or separately, what state of charge is required, and what documentation the carrier needs. Get that in writing before booking rather than discovering it at pickup.

Where the battery is removable and shipping it separately is permitted, that is frequently the simplest path.

Securement Without Damage

Ordinary equipment securement assumes a frame that can take chain tension anywhere. These machines usually cannot.

Use the manufacturer’s designated tie-down points. If the documentation does not identify any, ask, because a lightweight chassis with a chain pulled across it distorts, and a distorted chassis on a machine that navigates by geometry is a real problem.

Straps rather than chains are frequently correct here, with edge protection. Wheel chocks and blocking matter because these machines are light: a load that a chain would hold by sheer tension needs to be physically prevented from moving instead.

Crating is worth the cost on anything with exposed sensors. Most manufacturers ship new units crated, and keeping that crate for a subsequent move is the cheapest protection available.

Weather and the Trailer Choice

Electronics and water do not mix, and an open trailer at highway speed in rain is a washing machine.

Enclosed transport is the right default for anything with exposed sensors or open connectors, and the cost difference is trivial against the value of the equipment. Where an open trailer is used, the machine needs to be properly crated and wrapped rather than tarped as an afterthought.

Temperature matters for battery systems too. Extreme cold affects lithium batteries, and a machine sitting on a deck across a northern winter is exposed to conditions the manufacturer may specify against.

Site Access and Delivery

The destination is usually a farm, which means the last mile is frequently the hard part.

Unimproved farm tracks, soft ground after rain, gates too narrow for a tractor and trailer, and no room to turn around are all normal. Say honestly what the access is when you book, and be prepared for a meeting point at a hard-surfaced location if the farm itself cannot take the truck.

Someone has to be there who can receive the machine, check it against the photographs taken at origin, and describe any damage specifically on the bill of lading rather than as general wear. On equipment where damage may be invisible, note explicitly that a full functional inspection was not possible at delivery. Where a dealer or integrator is handling commissioning, agree in advance whether they are receiving the machine or you are, because the person who signs is accepting its condition.

Common Questions
