Florida, which connected the combination as the 27th state in 1845, is nicknamed the Sunshine State and recognized for its balmy climate and natural loveliness. The Dutch were the first to settle by the Hudson River in 1624. After two years, they founded the colony of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island.
