Five Reasons to Choose Enclosed Transport for a Luxury Car
The premium is about 20 to 30 percent over open transport. Here is what it actually buys, stated without inflation, and the cases where it does not earn its cost. For the full comparison see our guide to why choose enclosed car transport.

1. Road Debris Never Reaches the Car
This is the concrete one. An open deck exposes your vehicle to whatever traffic throws up for the entire journey. Over 2,000 miles that means road grime at minimum and the occasional stone. On a daily driver you wash it off. On original paint, or a respray that cost five figures, a single chip is a body shop visit.
2. Loading Geometry Stops Being a Risk
Low front splitters and short approach angles are damaged on ramps far more often than on the highway. Enclosed carriers commonly carry a hydraulic liftgate, which raises the vehicle level onto the deck with no approach angle at all. If your car is low, this single feature is worth more than the walls.
Ask specifically whether the assigned carrier has a liftgate. Enclosed does not imply it.
3. Tie-Downs Suit Modern Suspension
Older practice chains a vehicle at frame or suspension points, which risks control arms, underbody aerodynamics and adjustable dampers. Enclosed operators handling high-value cars use soft straps over the tires, letting the car’s own suspension absorb road movement exactly as engineered.

4. Fewer Vehicles Means Less Handling
An enclosed trailer carries two to six cars against seven to ten on an open carrier. That means more room during loading and unloading and fewer vehicles moved around yours. Since most transit damage occurs during loading rather than in motion, reducing handling is a real reduction in risk.
5. It Arrives Ready
Practical rather than glamorous: a car off an enclosed trailer arrives clean. If it is going to a show, an auction, a photo shoot, or a buyer who has never seen it, that matters. A vehicle off an open deck after 1,500 miles needs detailing before it can be presented.
When the Premium Earns Its Cost
What It Does Not Buy
Enclosed trailers are not climate controlled. They are not more heavily insured by default, since coverage is a property of the carrier’s policy rather than the trailer. And they do not come with a guaranteed delivery date; pickup and delivery remain windows of a day or two on each end.
Anyone selling enclosed transport on climate control or guaranteed insurance is overstating it.

Check the Insurance Limit Regardless
Ask for the cargo insurance certificate and compare the stated limit against your car’s real market value, not a book figure. Standard limits are generous for an ordinary vehicle and frequently short for a six-figure one. If there is a gap, arrange supplemental transit coverage or choose a carrier holding higher limits, and check whether your own agreed-value policy extends to third-party transport.
Booking Around Demand
Enclosed capacity is thinner than open and concentrates around major auctions, concours weekends and the seasonal storage migrations in late fall and early spring. Two to four weeks of lead time is realistic; longer if your date is fixed.
Choosing Between Shared and Dedicated Enclosed
Enclosed is not one product. A shared enclosed trailer carrying four to six cars costs meaningfully less than a dedicated single-vehicle run, and it is entirely appropriate for most high-value vehicles. A dedicated trailer means your car travels alone, with no other loading or unloading stops, and it costs substantially more.
Dedicated makes sense for genuinely irreplaceable cars, for deliveries where timing must be exact, and where the owner wants the shortest possible chain of handling. For a valuable but replaceable modern performance car, shared enclosed is usually the right balance.
Preparing a Luxury Car Properly
Wash it before pickup, because condition photographs of a dirty car are worthless and paint marks are what get disputed. Photograph every panel, the wheels, the lower valances and the odometer in daylight. Leave roughly a quarter tank, or 30 to 50 percent charge for an EV.
Then brief the driver on anything non-obvious: adjustable ride height or a nose-lift system, an aftermarket alarm, a battery cut-off, or a starting procedure that is not standard. Most avoidable problems at loading come from a driver not knowing something the owner assumed was obvious.
Common Questions
What does enclosed actually cost? Roughly 20 to 30 percent over open. Open runs about $0.84 to $2.05 per mile depending on distance, so coast to coast lands several hundred above the $2,200 to $2,800 open range. Those are planning estimates. Our own book since 2023 covers 443 enclosed moves, where the middle half ran $1,050 to $1,750 against $850 to $1,500 for open transport.
Hard-sided or soft-sided? Both fully enclose the vehicle. Hard-sided offers marginally better security; soft-sided is lighter and often more available. Either is a large step up from open.
Can I be present at loading? Usually yes, and it is worth doing for a valuable car so you can photograph the tie-downs.
Does the driver start my car in transit? Standard practice is to load, secure and not start until unloading. Say so at booking if your car needs periodic running or must not be started.
