Cost per mile falls sharply as distance rises, so a 400 mile move can cost more per mile than a 2,800 mile one while costing far less in total. Understanding that curve is what lets you tell a fair quote from an opportunistic one.
Why Per-Mile Pricing Is Misleading
A carrier incurs the same fixed work regardless of distance: the quote, the dispatch, the drive to your address, the loading, the inspection paperwork, the securement, and the same again at delivery. On a short move that overhead is spread across a few hundred miles. On a long one it is spread across thousands.
So a quote of $1.90 a mile is reasonable on a 500 mile move and absurd coast to coast. Judge the total against the distance band rather than against a per-mile figure someone quoted you out of context.
Real Coast-to-Coast Lanes
These are open-transport ranges for a standard sedan outside peak season. Lane popularity matters as much as raw distance: busy corridors between large metros sit at the bottom of their band.
What Moves the Number
Vehicle size and weight. A carrier sells deck space and payload, so a full-size truck or SUV costs meaningfully more than a compact on the same lane. Give the actual model rather than a category.
Operability. A vehicle that will not start or roll needs a winch and adds roughly $100 to $250. Disclosed up front it is a line item; discovered on pickup day it is a refused load.
Enclosed transport. Adds 20 to 30 percent, and is the right call for classics, exotics, low-clearance cars and winter moves through salted states.
Season and direction. Lanes are not symmetrical. The snowbird flow makes southbound expensive in autumn and northbound expensive in spring, and the same route in the same week can differ by hundreds of dollars depending only on which way you are going.
Access at each end. A rural address well off the interstate means a detour the carrier prices in. Meeting near a major metro is often cheaper than the drive costs you.
What Is Included, and What Is Not
A standard quote covers door-to-door transport as close as a 75-foot rig can legally reach, the carrier’s cargo insurance, tolls and fuel. Those are not extras and should not appear as surcharges later.
What sits outside it: expedited or guaranteed-date service, enclosed transport, winching for a non-runner, supplemental insurance above the carrier’s cargo limit, and storage if you cannot receive the vehicle when it arrives. Ask which of these apply to you at quote time, and get the answer in writing.
How to Read a Quote
Three questions separate a firm number from an optimistic one. Ask what carriers are currently accepting on your lane, because that is the price that actually moves a car. Ask what could change the figure after booking, and expect a specific list rather than reassurance. And ask whether the quoted amount includes everything or is a base rate.
A quote noticeably below the others is the one to be suspicious of. Priced under what drivers will accept, the load simply is not taken, and the correction arrives a week later as a higher price and a lost date.
