How to Ship Aircraft Propellers

A propeller is not shipped as a part; it is shipped as a certified component, and the paperwork traveling with it is worth as much as the crate around it. A propeller with an incomplete logbook, a missing 8130-3 airworthiness tag or no traceable overhaul history loses a large part of its value on arrival, regardless of how well it was packed. Handle the documentation with the same care as the blades and the rest follows.

Why Blades Are Fragile in an Unobvious Way

A propeller blade is a precisely balanced airfoil, and the damage that matters is not the damage you can see.

A nick, a gouge or a bend that looks cosmetic changes the balance and creates a stress concentration, and a blade out of balance transmits vibration through the whole engine mount. That is why a dropped or struck propeller normally goes back to an overhaul shop rather than being cleaned up and fitted.

Composite blades add another failure mode: an impact can delaminate the internal structure with almost nothing visible on the surface. Neither type tolerates being leaned against a wall or set down on a concrete floor.

Crating Is the Job

Propellers ship in a rigid crate, and for a constant speed unit that crate is usually purpose built.

The hub is the strong point and the blades are not, so the assembly is mounted and secured by the hub, with the blades supported rather than bearing weight. Each blade is padded individually, and the tips get extra protection because they are what catches on everything.

Manufacturers and overhaul shops use reusable propeller shipping containers for exactly this reason, and if one is available for your propeller it is almost always the right answer. Where a bespoke crate is built, it needs internal bracing so nothing can shift, a base rated well above the weight, and a footprint with no overhang.

Fit blade tip protectors and cover any exposed hub surfaces or pitch change mechanism against moisture.

Fixed Pitch and Constant Speed

The two types ship differently and are quoted differently.

A fixed pitch propeller, often wood or aluminum, is a single piece and comparatively straightforward: crate it flat, support it across its span, and protect the tips.

A constant speed unit contains a hub mechanism, and it is heavier, more valuable and more sensitive. It should ship in its manufacturer’s container where one exists, and the hub must be secured so the blades cannot rotate or move against the mechanism in transit.

Say which you have when you book, along with the diameter, the number of blades and the crated weight.

The Documentation

This is where value is won or lost, and it is entirely within your control.

Send the propeller logbook, the FAA Form 8130-3 airworthiness approval tag where the unit is certified, the overhaul or repair records, and the serial number recorded against the shipment. Keep copies separately from the crate, because paperwork inside a crate that goes astray goes astray with it.

Photograph the propeller from every angle before it is packed, including each blade face and the leading edges, and photograph the crate sealed. On a component whose condition is the whole of its value, that record is what settles any later question.

How It Travels

A crated propeller ships as palletized LTL freight, not as an oversize load, and it is priced on weight, dimensions and freight class rather than on mileage.

A light aircraft propeller crate is manageable; a large multi blade unit from a turboprop is heavy and long enough to need particular handling. Arrange a liftgate at any end without a dock or forklift, since a crate of this shape is awkward to move by hand and awkward is how it gets dropped.

Declare the value. Standard carrier liability is calculated by weight and class and will be a small fraction of what an overhauled propeller is worth, so cover has to be arranged to match rather than assumed.
