What Is Actually Changing in the Auto Industry, and What It Means for Shipping a Car

Most predictions about the car industry age badly within a year. The structural shifts do not. Electrification, the way cars are sold, the software inside them and where they are built have all moved in one direction for a decade, and each one changes something practical about moving a vehicle from one place to another.

Here is what has genuinely shifted, and where it touches transport.

Electrification Is a Weight Story

The headline is emissions. The consequence for transport is mass.

A battery electric vehicle typically weighs several hundred to well over a thousand pounds more than the equivalent gasoline car, because the battery pack is heavy and the structure around it has to be stronger. On a car hauler that matters, because the trailer has a gross weight limit and the driver has to stay legal at every scale house on the route.

The practical effect is simple: say if your vehicle is electric when you book. A load of nine EVs is a different weight calculation from a load of nine sedans, and a carrier who knows in advance can plan the deck properly. Carriers also generally prefer a charge somewhere in the middle rather than full or empty, and an EV that cannot be moved under its own power needs to be flagged, because some cannot be put in neutral and rolled the way a gasoline car can.

Cars Are Being Sold Differently

The single largest change in how Americans buy cars is that a growing share never visit the lot the car is on.

Online used car retail, dealer group inventory sharing across states, and manufacturers selling directly have all normalized buying a vehicle sight unseen from several states away. That was unusual fifteen years ago and it is routine now.

This is why individual vehicle transport has grown alongside it. When the car you want is in another state, somebody has to move it, and the choices are a long drive in an unfamiliar vehicle or a carrier. It also means more first time shippers, which is why the same questions come up constantly: how long it takes, what the insurance covers, and whether personal items can be left inside. The short answers are five to ten days on a long route, the carrier’s cargo policy covers the vehicle rather than its contents, and no.

Software Changed What a Car Is

Modern vehicles receive updates over the air, run driver assistance systems that depend on cameras and radar, and in many cases will not function normally without a working connection to the manufacturer.

Two consequences for transport. First, calibration: sensors behind the windshield and in the bumpers are precision items, which is one more reason a carrier secures a vehicle by the wheels rather than pulling on the body. Second, tracking. Many cars now report their own location, and owners watching a hauler’s route sometimes see what looks like a detour. Usually it is not: the truck is collecting or delivering other vehicles, and the permitted or practical route is rarely the shortest line between two points.

Keyless systems are worth a mention too. If the vehicle needs a specific procedure to be moved, put it in writing and hand it over with the key rather than assuming the driver will work it out.

Manufacturing Moved, So Freight Moved

Battery plants, assembly plants and supplier parks have been built in a band across the southeast and midwest, and that has redrawn some of the country’s freight patterns.

For anyone shipping a car this shows up indirectly, as pressure on capacity in particular corridors. When a region absorbs a lot of new commercial freight, the carriers serving it have more options, and rates on nearby lanes firm up. It is one of several reasons the same mileage prices differently in different parts of the country.

Prices, Loans and How Long People Keep Cars

New vehicle transaction prices and loan terms both stretched over the past decade, and the average age of a car on American roads kept climbing.

That last number is the interesting one for transport. An older fleet means more vehicles being moved that are not in perfect running order: cars that start but do not drive well, project cars, inherited vehicles, cars that have sat for a year. Those need to be described accurately at booking, because a vehicle that will not roll, steer and brake requires a winch and a carrier equipped for it.

Autonomy Is Slower Than the Coverage Suggests

Driver assistance has become genuinely widespread. Full autonomy has not, and the gap between those two facts is where most of the confusion lives.

In trucking specifically, the technology has been demonstrated repeatedly on long, straight, well mapped highway corridors, and it remains scarce everywhere else. Car hauling is one of the harder cases: loading a vehicle onto an inclined deck within an inch of tolerance, judging a residential street, and deciding whether a low front bumper will clear a ramp are all human judgment tasks.

So the realistic near term picture is the same driver with better tools, not a driverless network. Anyone quoting a firm date for the latter is guessing.

What None of This Changes

The fundamentals of moving a vehicle have been stable for years, and they still are.

Price is driven by distance, route, vehicle size and weight, whether it runs, timing and whether you need enclosed transport. Open trailers move the large majority of cars. The bill of lading is still the document that matters, and photographs taken in daylight before loading are still the best protection you have. Access at both ends still decides whether pickup is easy, because a 75 foot truck cannot use a narrow residential street regardless of what the vehicle on it costs.
