Everything You Need to Know About the State of Kansas (KS)
Kansas whose capital is Topeka is bordered by Nebraska in the north; Missouri in the east; Oklahoma in the south; and Colorado in the west. The state is divided into 105 counties with 628 cities. Its largest county by surface area is Butler County. The state is equidistant from both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
Kansas, situated on the American Great Plains, gained statehood as the 34th in the country on January 29, 1861. Its path to statehood was a long one filled with blood. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 opened both territories to settlement and allowed the new settlers to decide whether the states would be admitted into the union as “free” or “slave”. The north and south competed to send the most settlers into the region and this quickly resulted in violence. Hence the appellation “Bleeding Kansas”.
In 1954, Kansas became a battleground of the civil rights movement when the pivotal Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka case was decided in the Supreme Court. This resulted in the abolishment of the “separate but equal” doctrine in public schools. Kansas is also known for its contributions to jazz music and barbecue.
Kansas has some nicknames including Sunflower State, Wheat State, and Jayhawk State of the country. The state’s motto is “Ad Astra per Aspera” which means “to the stars through difficulties” which simulates its history of struggle.
Fort Riley, an army installation of the United States was established in 1853 near the Kansas River. Its purpose was to protect settlers and traders along the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails. In 1866, the 7th Cavalry was organized at the fort under General George Armstrong Custer. General Custer went on to lead the regiment in the infamous attack on Sioux and Cheyenne tribes at the Battle of Little Bighorn in June of 1876.
When French astronomer Pierre Janssen first discovered the helium element on the sun in 1868, people believed it to be one of the rarest elements. It was not until 1905 that faculty members at the University of Kansas in Lawrence identified helium as a common element on the earth. This occurred when the faculty members began experimenting with gas from a newly drilled well in Dexter.
Referred to as “The Wheat Capital of the World,” Kansas is the leading producer of wheat in the United States. In 2009, Sumner County produced 9 million bushels of wheat.
Meade’s Ranch in Osborne County, Kansas, is the Geodetic Center of North America. A geodetic center is the point of reference that surveys all property lines and boundaries. Also known as the North American Datum, this triangulation station for the United States, Canada, and Mexico was identified in 1901.
Although the origin remains unclear, the terms “Jayhawk” and “Jayhawker” were originally used to describe raiders and looters during the period of unrest. This followed the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 when the Kansa settlers decided on the issue of slavery. Free-state proponents later used the term solely as a label for free-state proponents, and it eventually became associated with all Kansans.
During the civil war, Kansas suffered the highest rate of fatal casualties of any Union state.
Car Shipping To Kansas
Factors Affecting the Cost of Shipping to Kansas
1. Size of Vehicle
The size and weight of the vehicle greatly impact the cost of shipping. Vehicles with greater weights and larger sizes typically cost higher than smaller-sized vehicles. Heavy-duty vehicles usually require special accommodations such as more head space. Hence, they cost more than regular cars. Transporting larger vehicles demands higher fuel consumption which in turn leads to higher costs of shipment.
2. Timing
The cost of shipping vehicles varies at different times of the year. Winter and summer are usually the most expensive periods for car shipping. Summer is the most conducive weather to ship and this results in higher demand for shipping companies. The increased demand consequently leads to increased costs of shipping.
Shipping during winter tends to be more difficult due to the often slippery state of roads in this weather. This results in the increased cost of shipping vehicles to Kansas.
3. Location
The distance covered while shipping a vehicle affects its shipping cost. The farther the vehicle’s location from Kansas, the higher the cost. Shipping vehicles from farther locations means a longer time is spent in transit and this in turn leads to higher fuel consumption and increased costs.
Additionally, the location it is being shipped from determines its cost. Popular and largely populated areas cost less than areas that are not frequently visited. Areas not frequently visited are oftentimes difficult to access.
4. Carrier Options
There are two ways your vehicle can be shipped:
Open Carrier
This method transports a higher number of vehicles at the same time. While this method is significantly cheaper, it leaves your vehicle exposed to harsh weather elements. It is also a faster method and is offered by most cat shipping companies in Kansas.
Enclosed Carrier
This method comes at a higher price but provides greater protection for your vehicle. The enclosed carrier option is recommended if you plan to ship a high-end vehicle such as an exotic or antique car to Kansas. It ensures that your vehicle is not exposed to rain, sun, or even dust.
Also, the delivery method plays a critical role in the cost of shipping. Terminal-to-terminal deliveries are usually cheaper than door-to-door deliveries.
Choosing the Ideal Car Shipping Company in Kansas
Finding the best car shipping company is very important as it determines if you get a positive car shipping experience. Factors to consider before choosing a car shipping company in Kansas include:
1. Insurance Coverage
Inquiries should be made to confirm that the intended company will provide insurance for your vehicle in the event of any damage in the car shipping process. Car shipping companies are legally obliged to have liability insurance.
The liability insurance covers damages done to your vehicle in the process of loading, unloading, and transportation. It however does not cover damages from the vehicle’s normal operation such as worn-out parts.
There are varying insurance options and the condition of your vehicle determines which option is most suitable.
2. Payment Options
Most companies require a small deposit at the time of dispatch and full payment on delivery of your vehicle with cash or a certified check at the point of pick-up or drop-off. At other times, discounts are offered when payment is made beforehand. Always be wary of companies who want a full payment prior to dispatch.
3. Cancellation Policy
In the event that you have to cancel your order, ensure that the cancellation policy of your shipping company is favourable to you. Some companies require a deposit to be paid in advance while some only ask for a nominal fee.
Also, some companies will hold on to a part of your deposit when cancellation is made after the shipment has been booked or if the carrier has already been dispatched.
Although cancellation fees are to be deducted, they should not be overcharged.
4. Ease of Communication
Before selecting a car shipping company, observe their ability to communicate. Ensure that their contact support staff are patient enough to explain all procedures to you. This eliminates every form of ambiguity and makes conflict resolution easier if the need arises.
Before you Ship Your Car
While the shipping company does the bulk of the work, there are a few things you ought to do before your car is put on the auto carrier.
They are:
Ensure the gas tank is only a quarter filled. This reduces the overall weight of your car which in turn reduces your shipping costs. A quarter-filled tank is sufficient to load and offload your car from pick-up to drop-off.
Inspect and ascertain there are no leaks in your car. If any is found, fix it before dropping it off. Dispatching a leaking car can damage other cars and some carrier companies will outrightly refuse to dispatch such cars.
Choose the most suitable shipping option for your car.

The state’s only major commercial (Class C) airport is Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. It is located along the US-54 on the western edge of the city. The Manhattan Regional Airport in Manhattan is another one of its airports. It provides daily flights to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. This makes it the second-largest commercial airport in the state. Most air travelers in north-eastern Kansas fly out of Kansas City International Airport located in Platte County, Missouri. They also make use of the Topeka Regional Airport in the state’s capital.
In the state’s south-eastern region, people often use Tulsa International Airport in Tulsa, Oklahoma, or the Joplin Regional Airport in Joplin, Missouri. For those in the far western part of the state, Denver International Airport is a popular option. Connecting flights are also available from smaller Kansas airports in Dodge City, Garden City, Hays, Hutchinson, Liberal, or Salina.
Dotted across the state are smaller regional and municipal airports, including the Lawrence Municipal Airport. The Lawrence Municipal Airport houses many aircraft for the city of Lawrence, the University of Kansas, Miami County Airport, Wamego Airport, Osage City Municipal Airport, (which is the headquarters of Skydive Kansas), Garden City Regional Airport, Manhattan Regional Airport, and Dodge City Regional Airport.
The Southwest Chief Amtrak route runs through the state from Chicago to Los Angeles. Rail stops in Kansas are Lawrence, Topeka, Newton, Hutchinson, Dodge City, and Garden City. An Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach connects Newton and Wichita to the Heartland Flyer in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Amtrak is proposing to modify the Southwest Chief from its status as a direct passenger rail operation. Plans call for shortening the route from Los Angeles to Albuquerque. Thruway buses would replace the train on the route between Albuquerque and Dodge City, where train services east to Chicago would resume.
Apart from passenger carrying, Kansas also carries out its freight services through four Class I railroads; Amtrak, BNSF, Kansas City Southern, and Union Pacific, as well as many short-line railroads.
Two Interstate highways serve the Kansas state. The highways have one beltway, two spur routes, and three bypasses, with over 874 miles (1,407 km) in all. Interstate 70 (I-70) was the first section of the interstate to be opened in the nation. It was opened on the 14th of November 1956 and is located just west of Topeka.
I-70 is a major east-west route connecting Denver, Colorado, and Kansas City, Missouri. Cities along this route (from west to east) include Colby, Hays, Salina, Junction City, Topeka, Lawrence, Bonner Springs, and Kansas City.
I-35 is a major north-south route connecting Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Des Moines, Iowa. Cities along this route (from south to north) include Wichita, El Dorado, Emporia, Ottawa, and Kansas City (and suburbs).
Spur routes serve as connections between the two major routes. I-135, a north-south route, connects I-35 at Wichita to I-70 at Salina. I-335, a southwest-northeast route, connects I-35 at Emporia to I-70 at Topeka. I-335 and portions of I-35 and I-70 make up the Kansas Turnpike.
Bypasses include I-470 around Topeka, I-235 around Wichita, and I-670 in downtown Kansas City. I-435 is a beltway around the Kansas City metropolitan area while I-635 bypasses Kansas City.
U.S. Route 69 (US-69) travels south to north, from Oklahoma to Missouri. The highway passes through the eastern section of Kansas, traveling through Baxter Springs, Pittsburgh, Frontenac, Fort Scott, Louisburg, and the Kansas City area.
Kansas also has the country’s third-largest state highway system after Texas and California. This is because of the high number of counties and county seats (105) and their intertwining.
By dialing short-code 511, callers will get access to information about road conditions, construction, closures, detours, and weather conditions for the state highway system. Weather and road condition information is updated every 15 minutes.
Kansas has access to 122 miles of the Missouri River along the northeast corner of the state. There are eight commercial terminals located near Atchison, Leavenworth, Lansing, White Cloud, and Kansas City. The Port of Kansas City, Woodswether Terminal, is located within a mile of downtown Kansas City and the interstate highway loop at river mile 367.1 on the south bank of the Missouri River.
Foodstuffs, fertilizer, scrap steel, cement, and other raw materials, as well as machinery, make up the bulk of shipments. The shipping season generally lasts between eight and nine months.
The Port of Catoosa, an inland seaport located near Tulsa, Oklahoma, is approximately 50 miles from the Kansas border. South Kansas, Oklahoma Railroad, and the BNSF Railway provide direct rail access to the Port. It is a year-round, economical alternative to other means of traveling. It is especially advantageous to businesses manufacturing large goods that need to be assembled before shipping.

I had originally scheduled a my car transport with Nationwide auto transportation (don't us them). On the day of my pickup nationwide called me stating that they had no one to pick up my car after I have made a reservation 2 weeks prior. When i originally made my reservation i was told tbwy would contact me two day before the pick. Due to their lack of professionalism I cancelled there service.
I called ship a Car the same day and Pepper answered. We scheduled a pickup for the next busy day and with 48 my car was shipped from Florida to California.
