Q: Is an enclosed trailer worth it going north?

Almost nobody thinks so on this lane: fewer than one in ten of the car moves we have dispatched from Florida to Illinois since 2023 went enclosed; a Tacoma from Stuart to Richmond did. The rest, Broncos, Highlanders, Lexuses and Tahoes among them, went open and arrived; a pair of Star EV low-speed vehicles also came north in a trailer, and is counted with the carts rather than the cars. A trailer costs about a third more and is the right answer for a classic, a convertible or a car a few inches off the ground; for the rest the open carrier is what the coordinator will quote.

Q: Where do you collect in Florida, and where do you deliver in Illinois?

Naples and Orlando are our most frequent pickups, then Clermont, Plantation, Miami, Aventura, Kissimmee, Fort Lauderdale, Sarasota, Stuart and Jacksonville, a car at a time. In Illinois, Chicago is the most common delivery, then Lisle and Highland Park, with Elmhurst, Deerfield, Elk Grove Village, Woodstock, Spring Grove, Lincolnwood, Rolling Meadows and Richmond behind them. A Naples gate means meeting the driver at the plaza outside it; a Chicago address means a lot near a Kennedy or Stevenson ramp; the suburbs take the truck at the door.

Q: When does everybody go home?

April. It has been our busiest booking month on this lane since 2023, with March and May behind it, and between them those three months carry most of the file. It is the winter households leaving Naples and Orlando in the same fortnight, and it is why the northbound wait is ten days where the southbound one is five: everyone wants the same Interstate 75 truck. Book a late-April pickup in the first days of the month with a three to five day window, and it moves; book it on the twentieth for the twenty-fifth and it waits.

Q: Two cars on one order, or a car bought from a Florida seller?

Both are routine. A Wrangler Rubicon and a BMW 430 went from Aventura to Deerfield on one order, sharing the trailer and the dispatch, with the second car at an incremental rate. A car bought from a private seller or a dealer in Florida can be collected without you: give the seller’s contact and the address, the driver does the inspection report with the seller and sends it to you, and you or a named person with photo ID meets the truck in Illinois. Over 1,200 to 1,400 road miles the open band is about 90 cents a mile, above the southbound direction because the spring return concentrates the demand into six weeks. We leave Naples the last week of April. When do we book?

The first week of April, with a pickup window of three to five days and the car ready a day before the movers rather than the same morning. April carries more of our northbound bookings than any other month, the ten-day median wait was earned in it, and the households that book on the twentieth for the twenty-sixth are the ones that meet the eighteen-day tail. What does Illinois want when the car arrives?

If the car is already registered in Illinois, nothing; it comes home on its own plates. If you are moving to Illinois, the Secretary of State gives you thirty days to title and register the car, most of the Chicago area requires an emissions test on gasoline cars more than a few years old, and residents of the city itself need a Chicago city sticker within thirty days as well. None of it touches the shipment, but keep the Florida title in your papers rather than in the glove box, because documents inside the car are not covered.

The car has been in the Florida sun all winter. Anything to do before pickup?

Start it a few days before the truck comes, because a battery that has sat since December is the commonest reason a northbound pickup fails; check the tire pressures, which drop in a garage; and leave about a quarter of a tank, enough to drive on and off the trailer at both ends without adding weight. Photograph the car in daylight before the driver arrives. A quick wash helps the inspection report, though on this direction there is no salt to worry about until the car is home.

Will the truck come into our Naples community?

Rarely. Most Naples, Bonita Springs and Estero communities have a gate, a guardhouse and roads laid out for golf carts, and a 75-foot hauler will not fit the loop or turn at the end of it. The driver rings the evening before and agrees a spot outside, usually a plaza on Tamiami Trail or a wide street by Interstate 75, and you drive the car out for the inspection and loading. Your coordinator will have told you the arrangement before the day, and the Illinois end is usually the reverse: a suburban driveway that takes the truck.

MacDill to Scott Air Force Base. Is there a military reduction?

Yes, $25 off the quote for active duty and veterans, applied by the coordinator when you mention it. MacDill, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Pensacola and Eglin to Scott or Naval Station Great Lakes are runs we have made. At Great Lakes the delivery is a short run off the Tri-State and straightforward once the gate is arranged; the driver waits outside it unless a sponsor escorts the truck in.

Should the SunPass come off for the trip?

Yes, or seal it in its bag, and the same for an I-PASS you brought south. A car riding a trailer up the Florida Turnpike, through the Georgia and Kentucky gantries and onto the Illinois Tollway passes a dozen readers, and a live transponder on the glass can be charged at each one. The carrier pays its own tolls and they are already inside the rate; nothing from the trip should appear on your account.

What am I paying and when?

Two amounts, neither before a truck is found. The broker portion is charged when a northbound carrier accepts your Florida to Illinois dates and you have its name and window in writing; the carrier’s share goes to the driver at delivery in Illinois by card, cash or certified funds as your coordinator confirms before dispatch. Our southbound Illinois to Florida moves found a carrier in a median of five days; the northbound ones took ten, with a quarter waiting eighteen days or more. The difference is the calendar. Southbound bookings are spread through the year, so there is always a truck loading in the Chicago suburbs with room. Northbound bookings pile into March, April and May, when every winter household in Naples and Orlando wants the same Interstate 75 trailer, and the trucks wait to fill before they leave. Three weeks of notice turns that into a non-event; three days of notice does not.

April Is the Month

More of our Florida to Illinois bookings fall in April than in any other month, with March and May on either side of it, and together those three carry most of the file. It is the mirror image of the southbound page, where no month stands out, and the reason is simple: the winter households leave Illinois at different times between October and January, but they all come home when the Naples season ends. The practical advice follows from that. A car that can leave in early March or in June ships for less and moves sooner; a car that must leave in the last week of April should be booked in the first.

Nearly Every Car Went Open

Nearly every car move we have dispatched north on this lane went on an open carrier, Broncos, Highlanders, Lexuses, a Tahoe and a Pilot among them, and the exception was a Tacoma from Stuart in an enclosed trailer. A pair of Star EV low-speed electric vehicles from Clermont also came north in a trailer; they are closer to golf carts than to cars, so they are counted with the carts and not folded into the car figures. It leaves this lane without an enclosed band of its own, so a trailer is quoted at about a third over open, and it tells you what nearly everyone going home to Illinois decides: the open deck is fine.

Chicago Is the Delivery, but the Suburbs Are the Address

Chicago is our most common delivery on this lane, and yet the cars rarely go to a Chicago street. A car hauler cannot use Lake Shore Drive or the boulevards and cannot turn in Lincoln Park, so a city delivery is a meeting point by a Kennedy, Edens or Stevenson ramp, agreed the evening before. Lisle, Highland Park, Elmhurst, Deerfield, Elk Grove Village and Rolling Meadows, the next most common drops, take the truck at the door, and Woodstock, Spring Grove and Richmond up Route 12 usually do too, weather allowing. If you can choose where the car is delivered, a suburban driveway near the Tri-State is the quickest and cheapest end to this trip.
