Shipping a Car to or from Wayne County, Michigan
Wayne County covers Detroit, Dearborn, Livonia, Canton and the Downriver communities, and where inside it you are matters more than the county line does. A pickup in Livonia or Canton is straightforward suburban work. A pickup in a dense Detroit neighborhood, or anywhere around the airport, is a different conversation about where a 75 foot truck can legally stop. The County Is Not One Place
Wayne County holds about 1.7 million people across more than forty municipalities, and the transport picture differs across it.
The western and northern suburbs, Livonia, Canton, Plymouth, Northville and Westland, are open, low density and easy for a car hauler. Wide roads, room to turn, and straightforward access to I-275 and I-96.
Dearborn, Taylor and the Downriver communities are similar, with the added advantage of sitting close to I-75 and I-94.
Detroit itself varies block by block. Some neighborhoods have wide streets and empty lots and are easier than the suburbs; others are narrow, densely parked and effectively closed to a large truck. Midtown and Downtown are difficult during business hours.
Why This County Is Well Served
Wayne County sits at the intersection of I-94, I-75, I-96 and I-275, and that matters more than the population does.
Those are major freight corridors, so carrier density is high and a realistically priced load gets assigned quickly. Detroit is also a vehicle logistics hub in its own right, with constant new car movement between plants and distribution centers, which means car haulers specifically are plentiful here in a way they are not everywhere.
The practical effect is short assignment times on ordinary lanes and competitive pricing in both directions.
Transit Times and Cost
Expect one to two days to Chicago, two to three to the Northeast or the mid South, three to five to Texas or Denver, and seven to ten to California or the Pacific Northwest.
Add a few days to a week to get assigned. On the Chicago and Northeast lanes that is usually at the short end.
On open transport for a standard sedan, expect roughly $400 to $700 to Chicago, $600 to $900 to the Northeast, $900 to $1,300 to Florida or Texas, and $1,200 to $1,700 to the West Coast. A car that will not start or roll adds roughly $100 to $250 for winching, which needs declaring at booking rather than discovered at the curb.
Winter Is the Real Variable
Southeast Michigan gets genuine winter, and it affects both ends of a move.
Snow and ice across the region can delay a pickup by a day or two between December and March, and lake effect snow adds to that. Salt is heavy on the roads here, which is worth knowing if you are shipping a vehicle you care about: an open carrier means road spray, and on a car that has already spent winters here that is nothing new, but on a clean southern car arriving in January it is.
The other winter issue is the car itself. A vehicle that has sat through a Michigan winter frequently will not start, and a car that will not start becomes a winch job at the curb. Check the battery and the tire pressures before collection.
Where the Truck Can Stop
A car hauler is around 75 feet long and needs room to enter, stop, load and leave without reversing into anything.
In the suburbs that is usually the driveway or the street outside. In dense Detroit neighborhoods, around Midtown, or on any street with parking both sides, it is not. The area immediately around Detroit Metropolitan Airport has its own restrictions on commercial vehicle stopping.
Where access is poor, a meeting point at a large retail lot along a main road is faster than waiting for a driver willing to attempt the street, and it widens the pool of carriers who can take the load. Pick the spot at booking and send the exact address.
Buying or Selling Remotely
A lot of Wayne County moves are private sales, because Detroit’s used market draws buyers from across the country.
If you are buying sight unseen, get daylight photographs of every panel from the seller before collection. You will have nothing to compare against at delivery otherwise, and on a car bought remotely that record is the whole of your protection.
Make sure somebody is present at the collection address who can release the vehicle and hand over a key. A car sitting in a driveway with nobody home cannot be collected, and you pay for the dry run.
Preparing the Car
Wash it so existing marks are visible, then photograph every panel in daylight including the wheels, roof and lower bumpers. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel.
Empty the cabin and trunk, since personal items are not covered by cargo insurance and shift in transit. Fold the mirrors, disable a motion sensitive alarm and hand over a key.
At delivery, inspect before signing. Compare against your photographs, check the lower bumpers and wheels first because those are what loading damages, and note anything unexpected on the bill of lading while the driver is still there.
