Vehicle transport volume is not spread evenly across the country. It concentrates on a handful of corridors, and each one is busy for a specific, identifiable reason. Understanding which reason applies to your route tells you more about what you will pay than any general advice about distance.
Here are the patterns that actually drive volume, and what each means for pricing and timing.

Seasonal Migration Corridors
The most reliably busy lanes in the country, and the most predictable.
The northeast and midwest to Florida, Arizona and the Gulf Coast, southbound from roughly October through December and northbound from roughly March through May. Retirees and seasonal residents move on a school-free calendar that clusters tightly.
Two consequences. Rates in the busy direction firm up noticeably during the peak, because everyone wants the same trucks in the same direction at the same time. And rates in the opposite direction soften, because carriers need to reposition equipment anyway and a load beats an empty return.
If your move happens to run against the seasonal flow, you are in the cheap direction. Ask, because it is a real saving and it is invisible unless you know the pattern.
Relocation Corridors
Driven by where people are moving for work and cost of living rather than by weather.
California to Texas, Arizona and Nevada. The northeast to the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. Illinois outbound in several directions. These flows are strongly one directional over years rather than seasons, which produces a structural imbalance: plenty of capacity heading the popular way and thinner capacity coming back.
That imbalance is why an identical distance can price quite differently depending on direction. A carrier repositioning to where the loads are will take a cheap load to get there.
Summer Is the Whole Market’s Peak
Overlaying every corridor is a general seasonal pattern, and it is the single most important timing fact in vehicle transport.

Late spring through summer is the busiest period on almost every lane, because families relocate between school years, military moves cluster in the same window, and students move in August and September. Everything competes for the same drivers and equipment simultaneously.
The practical upshot: a move that can happen in October or February rather than July is a cheaper move on the same route, and booking two to three weeks ahead matters far more in summer than it does the rest of the year.
Metro to Metro Beats Everything Else
The clearest single rule in this business: proximity to a major corridor matters more than distance.
A long move between two large metropolitan areas that sit on interstates is straightforward and competitively priced, because many carriers run that route regularly and your vehicle fits into a load that exists anyway.
A shorter move where one end is two hours off the nearest interstate can cost more, because a driver has to detour, and that detour is unpaid mileage plus hours against a federal limit. Rural pickup or delivery is the most consistently underestimated cost factor in vehicle transport.
If you have flexibility about where the vehicle is collected or delivered, meeting nearer a main corridor is often the cheapest single change available to you.
Ports, Auctions and Military Bases

Ports. Imported vehicles land at a handful of coastal terminals and move inland from there, which makes the lanes out of those ports consistently busy.
Auction hubs. Large wholesale auctions generate enormous outbound volume on their sale calendars, and the lanes serving them are well covered as a result. That is good news if you are collecting from one.

Military installations. Permanent change of station moves cluster around a defined set of bases and around the summer peak, producing predictable seasonal surges on specific routes.
The useful thing about all three is that busy lanes are well served lanes. A route with a lot of traffic on it usually gets you a faster pickup and a more competitive price than a quiet one, which is the opposite of how people intuitively expect it to work.
The Genuinely Expensive Routes
Four categories where the price is high for structural reasons rather than distance.
Alaska, because of two international border crossings, a narrow carrier pool and northbound volume that far exceeds southbound. Barge is often competitive and worth pricing.
Hawaii, which is ocean freight rather than trucking, with a road leg at each end.
Anywhere genuinely remote, where the detour off the corridor dominates the quote.
Against a strong seasonal flow at peak, such as northbound out of Florida in December, when the capacity is all going the other way.
