How to Ship a Car to or From San Diego County, California
San Diego County is one of the best served markets in the country for vehicle transport in one direction and one of the least in the other, and the reason is that Interstate 5 ends here. The county is the southwest corner of the continental United States, so trucks arrive and then have to find a load going back out. That asymmetry shows up in your quote, and understanding it is how you time a move well.
Why Direction Affects Price Here
Carrier pricing follows the balance of freight in each direction, and San Diego sits at the end of the line rather than on a through route.
Interstate 5 runs north from the border through the county toward Los Angeles and on up the coast. Interstate 8 runs east toward Arizona. Interstate 15 runs northeast through the inland part of the county toward Riverside and Las Vegas. All three carry constant traffic, so inbound capacity is good.
Outbound is where the market tightens seasonally. When a lot of vehicles want to leave at once, rates rise, and when trucks are arriving loaded and leaving empty, they price accordingly. If your dates are flexible on an outbound move, that flexibility is worth more here than in a through market like Phoenix or Dallas.
The County Is Much Bigger Than the City
