Used equipment is where most contractors get their best value and their worst surprises, and the difference is almost always what was checked before the money moved. A machine with 6,000 hours and a complete service record is a better buy than one with 3,000 and none. Hours are the headline; history is the substance.

The Case For Buying Used

Depreciation is the whole argument. Heavy equipment loses a substantial share of its value in the first years, and a buyer who lets somebody else absorb that gets most of the working life for a fraction of the price.

Availability is the second reason. New machines can carry long lead times, and a contractor with work booked cannot wait two quarters for a delivery. Used equipment is available now.

And older machines are frequently simpler. Fewer electronics and less emissions aftertreatment means fewer things to fault and more that a competent shop can fix without a manufacturer diagnostic tool.

The Case Against

You are buying somebody else’s maintenance decisions, and you cannot see most of them.

Wear items are the visible part: undercarriage on a tracked machine, tires on a wheeled one, bucket edges and pins. The expensive part is what you cannot see, hydraulics, the transmission and the engine internals, and those are where a bad buy hurts.

Warranty is usually gone or short. Financing terms on used equipment are typically less favorable than on new. And emissions tier matters: some jurisdictions and some contracts restrict older engine tiers on site, which can make a cheap machine unusable for the work you wanted it for.

What to Actually Check

Hours first, but treat them as context rather than a verdict. A machine that has worked steadily is frequently healthier than one that sat.

Ask for service records and read them for intervals actually kept rather than for their existence. Oil analysis history is the single most informative document a seller can hand you, because it shows wear trends over time rather than a snapshot.

Inspect the undercarriage on tracked machines, since it is the largest single wear cost and a worn one can be a five figure item on its own. Check hydraulic cylinders for scoring and seepage, look for fresh paint that might hide a repair, and note whether the machine is clean in a way that suggests care or in a way that suggests preparation for sale.

Run it. Cold start it if you can, cycle every function, listen, and watch the gauges. A seller who will not let you start a machine has answered a question.

Auction, Dealer or Private Sale

Each has a different risk profile and it is worth knowing which you are in.

Auctions offer the widest selection and the sharpest prices, usually as-is with limited inspection time and no recourse. They suit buyers who can assess a machine quickly or who bring somebody who can.

Dealers cost more and frequently include a limited warranty, reconditioning and a machine that has been through a workshop. For a buyer without in-house mechanical depth, that premium is often worth paying.

Private sales sit between the two, with the most variable quality and the most room for negotiation. They also carry the most paperwork risk, so verify ownership and check for liens before any money changes hands.

Which Machines Hold Up Best Used

Not every category ages the same way, and that is worth factoring into what you shop for.

Excavators and dozers are generally sound used buys because the wear is concentrated in the undercarriage and the hydraulics, both of which are inspectable and both of which have known costs to put right. You can price the risk.

Wheel loaders and backhoes tend to have led harder lives, because they are the machines that get used for everything on a site. Check the pins, bushings and the loader arm geometry, since slop there is expensive and easy to overlook.

Cranes and lifting equipment are a different proposition entirely. They carry certification and inspection requirements, and a machine without a clean documented history is not simply a risk, it may be unusable until it is recertified. Never buy one on hours and appearance alone.

Attachments are the underrated part of the market. Buckets, breakers, augers and couplers frequently sell separately and cheaply, and a machine bought without the attachment you actually need is not the bargain it looked like.

Budget for Getting It Home

This is the cost most first time buyers underestimate, and it is genuinely large on heavy equipment.

Transport is decided by weight, width and height. Past 8 feet 6 inches wide, 13 feet 6 inches tall on the Interstate system, or 80,000 pounds gross, the load needs permits, and wide loads bring escorts and daylight-only movement with them.

Get the operating weight from the specification or a scale, and measure width and height as the machine actually stands rather than from a brochure. Wide track pads and aftermarket fittings change both.
