Dump Trailer Shipping

Remove every bit of material from the bed: aggregate, soil, debris, firewood, scrap, all of it. Carriers will not move a loaded dump trailer. The load adds weight the tow rig may not be rated for, it shifts at highway speed, and the carrier’s cargo insurance covers the trailer and not its contents.

Sweep the bed down to the steel and clear the frame as well: tools, binder chains, straps, blocking, and spare parts stored on the tongue or in the bed all come out. If the trailer has a toolbox, either empty it or note its contents and lock it, and tell your coordinator it stays with the trailer.

The bed must ride fully lowered with the hydraulic system at rest. Lower the hoist completely, cycle the pump off, and confirm the bed is seated on the frame rails rather than resting on hydraulic pressure. A bed that creeps up in transit is a serious road hazard.

Latch the tailgate and secure it with its safety chains or pins. If the gate has a spreader function, pin it closed. For barn door and high lift gates, check every latch point by hand. A tailgate that swings open at highway speed is the most common damage scenario in dump trailer transport and it is entirely preventable.

Most hydraulic dump trailers carry their own battery for the electric over hydraulic pump. Decide what the delivery end needs: if the bed must be operated on arrival, charge the battery before pickup; for deck transport, disconnect the negative terminal so nothing drains or shorts in transit.

Hand the wired or wireless remote to the driver at pickup, or secure it in the locked toolbox and tell your coordinator where it is. A delivered trailer with a dead battery and a missing remote is a bed that will not lift, and that turns a five minute delivery into a problem.

Tow-away transport requires the trailer to be genuinely roadworthy: running lights and brake lights working through the connector, brakes functioning, tires holding air with legal tread including the spare, and wheel bearings that have been serviced within recent memory. Note the connector type, flat four, seven way blade, or round pin, so the carrier arrives with the right adapter.

If any of these fail, say so at booking rather than hoping it slides. A trailer that cannot pass a roadside look moves on a deck instead, and knowing that in advance is the difference between a clean pickup and a rebooked one. There is no penalty for honesty, only for surprises.

Dump trailers come in three hitch configurations: a standard ball coupler, usually 2 5/16 inch on tandem axle units, a pintle ring on many heavier commercial trailers, and a gooseneck ball coupler on gooseneck and deckover models. Each requires different equipment on the tow rig, and a carrier that arrives with the wrong hitch cannot complete the pickup.

Confirm the hitch type when you book, and if you are not certain, describe the coupler to your SAC coordinator or send a photo. It is the single most preventable cause of failed trailer pickups, and it takes one minute to get right.

If the trailer has a roll tarp, crank it fully closed and secure the crank handle, or remove the tarp entirely for the move. A loose tarp at highway speed shreds itself and whips the bed rails. Remove side board extensions, and either pin loading ramps in their carriers or take them off the trailer.

Confirm the spare tire is bolted in its carrier rather than laid loose in the bed, and walk the trailer once looking for anything that is attached by habit rather than by hardware. If it can vibrate loose in 1,500 miles, it will.

Dump trailers live in yards, on jobsites, and behind gates, and the tow rig or deck truck needs room to reach them. Confirm the access road width, overhead clearance, and space to back up and hitch. After rain, consider whether the ground where the trailer sits will hold a heavy rig or swallow it.

If access is tight, arrange to stage the trailer at a driveway entrance, a yard gate, or a nearby lot before pickup day. Five minutes of staging planning with your SAC coordinator prevents the scenario where the carrier arrives and cannot reach the trailer.
