America's First Planned City
General Oglethorpe drew Savannah in 1733 around a grid of public squares, and twenty-two of them survive today, shaded by live oaks and Spanish moss. That plan left the city one of the largest historic districts in the country and one of the most walked, painted, and photographed places in the South.
