A Ford, a Forest, a Factory
Rockford’s name is literal: the shallow, rock-bottomed ford where wagons crossed the Rock River became the town site. The Forest City nickname followed from the tree canopy, and the manufacturing spine came from a century of furniture shops and machine-tool works that still shape the city’s character.
