The Turnpike Through the Mountains
Charleston is West Virginia’s shipping heart because two interstates meet there and a third, I-79, launches north from it. South of the capital, I-77 and I-64 share the West Virginia Turnpike, a mountain toll road that climbs through Beckley and threads some of the steepest interstate grades in the East. Carriers price it with respect: the lane is busy and reliable, but the mountains set the pace, and quotes that pretend otherwise are the ones that fall apart.
