Everything You Need to Know About the State of Virginia (VA)

Virginia, which was a part of the initial colonies, was one of the first parts of the United States to be permanently inhabited by the English. The English then went ahead to create Jamestown on the shores of the James River in 1607. Virginia is the home state of reputable personalities such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and some other founding fathers. The state played a crucial role in the American Revolution, which lasted between 1775 and 1783.

In addition, during the Civil War, which occurred between 1861 and 1865, the city of Richmond, Virginia, became the capital of the Confederacy, and more than half of the war’s battles were fought in the state. Today, many government organizations have their headquarters in Virginia. This is most true about Arlington, which is located across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Asides the eight presidents from there, other famous Virginians include singer Ella Fitzgerald, tennis star Arthur Ashe, actress Shirley MacLaine and authors Willa Cather and Tom Wolfe.

Patrick Henry gave his famous “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech before the second Virginia Convention at St. John’s Church in Richmond on March 23, 1775. The church was formerly called Henrico Parish.
On October 19, 1781, after three continuous weeks of bombardment, British General Lord Charles Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington in the Battle of Yorktown in Virginia, basically bringing an end to the American Revolution.
Virginia’s borders have been stretched and constricted several times since its commencement as the first of the 13 original colonies. In 1792, nine counties known as the Kentucky District of Virginia joined the union as the state of Kentucky, and in 1863, western counties of Virginia were approved to enter the union as the state of West Virginia.
The Arlington National Cemetery, one of America’s most prominent military cemeteries, was originally built in the early 19th century as a mansion by George Washington’s adopted grandson, George Washington Parke Custis. Robert E. Lee, who married Custis’ daughter, Mary Anna, lived in Arlington House at various periods until 1861, when Virginia seceded from the Union and the couple vacated the estate. On June 15, 1864, the property was inaugurated as a military cemetery.
Virginia has the record of being the birthplace of more U.S. presidents than any other state. Some of these presidents are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson.
The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg is the country’s second-oldest institution of higher education. It became an institution of higher education after Harvard; King William III and Queen Mary II of England signed an approval for its creation on February 8, 1693. At the behest of Thomas Jefferson, the first law school in America was instituted there in 1779.
Car Shipping in Virginia

The need to ship your car to or from Virginia may vary from schooling, vacation or outright relocation. The reason for shipping does not really matter, what is more important is that you have a positive and pleasurable experience while shipping. With the required knowledge, you are more likely to have your desired positive experience.

Choosing the Best Car Shipping Company in Virginia

The following are considerations to make when choosing a car shipping company:

  1. Experience

It is vital that the company you are choosing to ship your car has the required experience. This is because having relevant experience typically makes any process easier, and this includes car shipping.  Significant experience also prevents the company from falling into pitfalls an inexperienced company will not recognize.

  2. Licenses

There are specific licenses and registration that are needed to operate a car shipping company in Virginia. It is important that your preferred company has these required licenses. Lack of these licenses leaves you and your vehicle exposed to multiple risks.

  1. Reputation

When selecting a company, you should conduct a research about the company, ascertaining they do not have a negative history. On the contrary, they should have a reputation of trust and credibility. You can read testimonials and reviews of people who have worked with the company in the past.

Preparing Your Car for Shipping
  1. Clean

Before having your car sipped, it is advised that you clean both the interior and exteriors of your car. In addition, you can also take pictures of the car to serve as a reference and comparison of the state of your car before and after it was shipped.

  2. Declutter

Unnecessary items in the car should be removed from the vehicle. Not only does this make the car tidier, it reduces the overall weight of the car as well. This is important because the weight of your vehicle influences the cost of shipping the vehicle.

  1. Empty Gas Tank

This is another strategy to help reduce the weight of the car. You only need enough gas in your car to move it to and from the pick-up and delivery points.

  1. Gather all Required Documents

It is best you crosscheck that you have all the documents that will be required of you by the car shipping company. This should be done ahead of time to prevent delays when you are ready to  ship.

Factors Affecting Car Shipping Costs
  1. Functionality

Fully operational cars that do not require external assistance to be moved cost less to be shipped in comparison to vehicles that need assistance.

  1. Vehicle Specifications

You are likely to spend more shipping your car if it is large or heavy or both. Large cars take up more space in a carriage, hence, the increase in cost. Also heavy cars reduce the overall weight the carriage is permitted to carry, leading to an increase in its shipping costs.

  1. Seasonality

Car shipping companies are usually in high demand during the summer, which is considered a peak season. As a result, car shipping costs are usually higher during this time.

  1. Distance and Location

You are likely to spend less shipping your car if the distance to be covered while shipping your vehicle is a short one. However, longer distances typically cost more. Also, more accessible areas cost less than areas not frequently plied by the shipping company.

Virginia has Amtrak passenger rail service along several corridors, and Virginia Railway Express (VRE) maintains two commuter lines into Washington, D.C. from Fredericksburg and Manassas. VRE is one of the fastest-growing commuter rail services in the United State, managing nearly 20,000 passengers daily. Arlington was responsible for 40% of Virginia’s public transport trips as of 2013. Most of this comes from the Washington Metro transit system, which also services Alexandria and communities in Fairfax County along I-66. The system is currently extending west into additional areas of Loudoun County. Major freight railroads in Virginia include Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation. Commuter buses include the Fairfax Connector, FRED buses in Fredericksburg, and OmniRide in Prince William County. The Virginia Department of Transportation runs numerous free ferries throughout Virginia; the most notable one is the Jamestown-Scotland ferry, which crosses the James River in Surry County.

According to the 1932 Byrd Road Act, the state government controls most of Virginia’s roads, instead of a local county authority as is typically found in other states. As of 2018, the Virginia Department of Transportation was recorded to own and operate 57,867 miles (93,128 km) of the total 70,105 miles (112,823 km) of roads in Virginia. This made it the third-largest state highway system in the United States. Although the Washington Metropolitan Area, which includes Northern Virginia, has the second-highest degree of traffic congestion in the country, Virginia as a whole has the 21st-lowest rate of congestion, with an average commute time of 26.9 minutes. Virginia reached peak car usage before the year 2000, making it one of the first such states.

The Port of Virginia hopes to provide faster transit times to cargo owners by routing more containers into a recently renovated intermodal yard.

The port will reshuffle which terminals each vessel calls on based on the coalitions between ocean carriers and either CSX Transportation or Norfolk Southern Railway. This should result in fewer time-consuming wagons between terminals.

It could also drive the Port of Virginia toward its goal of moving 40% of containers inland via rail. This number has varied between 34% and 37% in recent years.

The port consists of three container terminals — Virginia International Gateway (VIG), Norfolk Intermodal Terminals (NIT), and Portsmouth Marine Terminal (PMT). The NIT provides on-dock rail services only to Norfolk Southern, while PMT provides limited CSX on-dock rail and none to NS. VIG, however, recently expanded to build 10,000-foot trains that serve both CSX and NS. According to the Virginia Port Authority, thirteen weekly services discharge in NIT, 10 in VIG, and 4 in PMT.

Some vessel strings were moved out of Virginia International Gateway during construction, which began in 2017. This resulted in containers trucked between terminals to be loaded onto a train, a time-consuming dray. With the VIG project complete, the port will now reorder the strings to increase terminal flow.

Tom Capozzi, VPA’s chief sales officer stated that “One of the advantages of shifting these vessels to more modern terminals is to eliminate all the unnecessary drayage and do it more seamlessly on the dock.” He also stated that the most important consideration is honoring the alliances between ocean carriers and railroads. Carriers aligned with CSX, for example, should be going into VIG rather than NIT.

Virginia has five major airports: Washington Dulles International and Reagan Washington National in Northern Virginia. The both manage more than twenty million passengers yearly. Richmond International; and Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport and Norfolk International serving the Hampton Roads area.

It has several other airports that offer restricted commercial passenger services, and sixty-six public airports that serve the state’s aviation needs. The Virginia Port Authority’s main seaports are those situated in Hampton Roads. They carried 69,416,600 short tons (62,973,700 t) of total cargo in 2018, the fifth highest of United States ports. The Eastern Shore of Virginia is the site of Wallops Flight Facility, a rocket-testing center owned by NASA, and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport, a commercial spaceport. Space tourism is also offered through Vienna-based Space Adventures.

I was very apprehensive about choosing a company to ship my sons car from NC to Wa. There are so many options out there. As soon as I spoke to Pepper Long, I knew that I would choose her company. She was friendly, helpful, and reassuring during the entire experience. She continuously checked on the progress of the shipment and kept me updated about where the car was and when I could expect it to be delivered. She even checked in on me in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. It was a great experience and I would definitely recommend using this service to anyone who is looking to ship a car.

I just had three cars shipped from the Dallas area to the Nashville area. My experience was amazing from the moment I called and spoke with Kristina to my cars being delivered. I can’t stress enough what an amazing experience I had.

I was disappointed to see some very low ratings on Yelp about this company. I spoke with Steve and a guy named Mike transported my 2 cars from California to New Orleans. My driver's name was Mike and he called me every day to let me know where he was in his transport. The cars arrived in pristine condition and very timely. I guess everyone's experience is different...but I got all-star treatment.

I had a little longer wait due to truck issues and the road. However, Bob Moran was beyond useful and helped me in more than one way. His customer service let alone human compassion for the things i was or might have been going through was very much appreciated during this huge transition in my life. I would recommend ship a car inc. And ask for Bob!

Surprised ourselves with a new Harley while on vacation and needed a way to get it home (from Michigan to Nebraska). Emily was very helpful, polite and kept us informed of shipping progress. Our driver Sam kept in touch with us giving us with updates of his location and ETA. The bike arrived in perfect condition, Sam was very cautious with all the vehicles in his trailer - he even wore gloves to move the vehicles! We would defiantly work with Emily and Sam if we ever find ourselves needing a vehicle transported again.

Everything worked out perfectly with Ship A Car. We were helped by Christie, and she was perfect. My daughter was calling her every couple of days to see what the status was. Initially, we got started on a rocky road, but that was our fault because we had a vendor that we thought was going to help, and he was scamming. So, we were very glad when we got in touch with Christie. She talked us through what would happen and when it would happen. In the very end, she fulfilled those dates that she said. The gentleman who was driving was cordial and helpful. He had to park someplace else because our street is small. The car got here safely. I was really satisfied.
