Should You Warm Up Your Car in Cold Weather?
The advice to let a car idle for several minutes before driving in winter is left over from carburetor engines, and it has been wrong for about thirty years. On any fuel injected car, which is every car built since the early 1990s, extended idling warms the engine more slowly than gentle driving does and wastes fuel doing it.
Thirty seconds is enough. Here is why, and what actually matters in the cold.

Why the Old Advice Existed
Carburettors mixed fuel and air mechanically and could not adjust for temperature. A cold carbureted engine ran badly, stalled easily and needed a choke and a few minutes of idling before it would pull cleanly. Warming up was genuinely necessary.
Fuel injection replaced all of that with sensors and a computer that adjusts the mixture continuously. A modern engine runs correctly from the moment it starts. The habit outlived the reason for it, largely because it was passed down.
What Actually Happens When You Idle
The engine warms up, slowly. An idling engine produces very little load and therefore very little heat, so it takes far longer to reach operating temperature than it would under gentle driving.
Meanwhile the rest of the car stays cold. The transmission, differential, wheel bearings and tires all warm from being used, not from the engine running, and those are the components that benefit most from being brought up to temperature gently.
There is also a cost to running rich. A cold engine uses extra fuel, and prolonged idling means running that enrichment for longer than necessary, which wastes fuel and can wash oil from cylinder walls over time.

What to Do Instead
Start the car, give it about thirty seconds, then drive gently for the first several minutes. No hard acceleration, no high revs, and let the engine come up to temperature under light load. That warms everything, not just the block.
The exception is visibility, and it is not really about the engine. Clear every window, mirror and light properly before moving, and clear the snow off the roof so it does not slide onto your windshield or into the car behind. That takes as long as it takes, and the engine idling while you do it is incidental rather than the purpose.
What Cold Weather Actually Damages
Four things worth attention, none of which idling fixes.
The battery. Cold reduces available capacity while simultaneously increasing the current needed to crank. A battery that was marginal in October fails in January. Have it tested before winter rather than after it strands you.
Tire pressure. Pressure falls roughly one PSI for every ten degrees Fahrenheit drop. Check monthly through winter, in the morning before driving, because that is when the reading is honest.
Road salt. The genuine long term threat. Salt accelerates corrosion on the underbody, brake lines and fuel lines, and it works whether the car is driven or parked. Wash the underside periodically through winter.
Fluids. Use a winter rated windshield washer fluid, since summer fluid freezes in the reservoir and lines. Check that coolant concentration is right for the temperatures you actually get.

Remote Start and Modern Systems
Remote start makes the old habit convenient, which is why it persists, but it does not change the engineering.
What it genuinely does well is comfort and visibility: a warm cabin and a clear windshield when you get in. Those are good reasons. What it does not do is protect the engine, and running it for fifteen minutes achieves nothing mechanical that thirty seconds and gentle driving would not.
Two cautions. Idling in an enclosed or partly enclosed space is genuinely dangerous because of carbon monoxide, and remote start makes it easy to do without thinking. And an unattended running car is an insurance and theft question in some jurisdictions, with some areas having ordinances against leaving one idling unattended.
On an electric vehicle the picture reverses: preconditioning while still plugged in genuinely helps, because it warms the cabin and battery using grid power rather than range.
If the Car Is Being Shipped in Winter
A few things change, and none of them involve warming it up.
Make sure it will start reliably. A carrier has to drive it onto the deck, and a car that will not crank on a cold morning becomes a winching job or a missed collection. If the battery is questionable, deal with it before the truck arrives.
Leave about a quarter tank of fuel, and be aware that a car collected in a salted region carries that salt with it. On a vehicle with fresh paintwork or real value, that is one of the better arguments for enclosed transport on a winter run.
If the car will be standing for months at the destination, treat it like a seasonal vehicle: a battery tender, correct tire pressures checked before driving rather than at the roadside, and treated fuel if it will sit a long time.
