Before pickup, confirm that your motor scraper is operational and can be safely driven onto the trailer. Check that the engine starts reliably, the transmission engages properly for movement, steering responds, and the machine operates normally. Test the bowl lift/lower and apron functions to ensure proper positioning for transport.

If the scraper is not operational – due to engine failure, hydraulic issues, or transmission problems – disclose this to your SAC coordinator at booking. Non-operational scrapers require specialized loading equipment such as a crane or heavy wrecker with adequate lift capacity, which must be pre-arranged. Do not wait until the driver arrives to report operational issues.

Before transport, lower the scraper bowl completely to minimize transport height. Position the apron to protect the cutting edge and reduce overall dimensions. The apron should be closed or positioned according to manufacturer transport recommendations. Ensure hydraulic cylinders hold position without drifting.

A raised bowl creates excessive transport height and an unstable center of gravity. An improperly positioned apron leaves the expensive cutting edge vulnerable to damage and may create width issues. Your SAC coordinator will confirm the proper transport position for your specific scraper model at booking.

For scrapers equipped with ejector blades or elevating conveyors, ensure these mechanisms are fully retracted and secured in the transport position. Engage any transport locks if equipped. Hydraulic systems must hold pressure to prevent extension during transit. For elevating scrapers, verify the conveyor system is secured.

An unsecured ejector or conveyor that extends during transport creates ground clearance hazards and potential damage. Some scrapers have specialized securing procedures for these components. Check your operator’s manual for manufacturer-specific transport preparation instructions.

If your scraper has a rear push block or special hitch for push-pull operation, ensure it is secured in the transport position. Push blocks should be pinned or locked to prevent movement. Hitch components should be secured according to manufacturer guidelines. Document any special coupling equipment that remains with the machine.

For push-pull scrapers, the rear hitching system is critical for operation and must be protected during transport. Verify that all pins, locks, and securing mechanisms are in place. An unsecured push block that shifts during transit can damage the machine or trailer.

Before transport, thoroughly clean dirt, mud, and material from the bowl, apron, undercarriage, and tires. Excessive material in the bowl adds unnecessary weight and can fall out during transit. Many states have regulations regarding equipment carrying soil across state lines.

Check all hydraulic lines, cylinders, and fittings for active leaks before pickup. Hydraulic fluid leaks create slip hazards during loading and can damage trailer decks. Pay special attention to bowl lift cylinders, apron cylinders, and ejector hydraulics. Repair known leaks before transport or disclose them to your coordinator.

Before transport, remove or secure any loose items from the scraper cab and exterior. Check that all engine compartment covers, access panels, and toolbox lids are secured. Inspect all tires for proper inflation and visible damage. Large scraper tires are expensive and should be protected during transport.

For scrapers with enclosed cabs, ensure doors and windows are closed and latched. Any aftermarket accessories like work lights, cameras, or communication equipment should be secured or removed if vulnerable. The scraper should be in clean, transport-ready condition when the carrier arrives.

Before booking, measure your scraper’s overall length, width at the widest point (usually the bowl), and height with the bowl lowered. Accurate measurements are essential for correct trailer matching and permit assessment. Operating weight is critical for determining appropriate trailer capacity.

Provide these dimensions to your SAC coordinator at booking: overall length, width at bowl, height with bowl lowered, and operating weight.
