How Harvesters Are Shipped
Harvester is a family, not a single machine, and the transport plan changes with the type. Combines and self-propelled forage harvesters are the heavy end, roughly 25,000 to 50,000 pounds with cabs near 13 feet tall, so they ride removable gooseneck (RGN) or double drop trailers as permitted oversize loads, with the header or crop pickup shipped separately to bring the width down. Cotton pickers and strippers are taller and heavier still and are RGN work almost without exception. Smaller specialty harvesters for potatoes, sugar beets, nuts, and vegetables often fit a step deck or standard lowboy with a routine permit. In every case the quote is built from the real model, tire setup, and attachment list, not a category average.
Headers, Width, and the Permit Math
The single most expensive mistake in harvester transport is shipping the machine with the head on. A combine or forage harvester body typically permits as a routine oversize load once the header comes off; left attached, a 12 to 18 foot width pushes the move into the steepest permit and escort tiers most states have. Harvester freight follows the crops. Machines move with the wheat run through Kansas from late spring, forage harvesters chase silage season, and dealer trades surge out of Nebraska and the corn states once fall harvest wraps. Book ahead of your window when you can; trailers that handle 13 foot machines get scarce at the peak, and lead time protects both the schedule and the rate.
Empty the grain tank or crop hoppers, remove or secure the head, fold augers and extensions, and lock the cab. Power wash before pickup, because crop residue and soil can trigger agricultural inspection holds at state lines. Photograph all sides plus the hour meter, and leave about a quarter tank of fuel for loading and unloading.
