Before pickup, confirm that your compactor is operational and can be safely driven or positioned for loading. Check that the engine starts reliably, the propulsion system functions for drum movement, and the articulation joint moves freely. For vibratory compactors, verify that the vibratory system is disengaged and secured for transport.

If the compactor is not operational – due to engine issues, hydraulic failures, or propulsion problems – disclose this to your SAC coordinator at booking. Non-operational compactors require specialized loading equipment such as a crane or heavy forklift, which must be pre-arranged. Do not wait until the driver arrives to report operational issues that prevent loading.

For articulated compactors with a pivot joint between the front and rear drums, position the machine with the joint perfectly straight – not turned left or right – before transport. Secure the joint using any factory transport locks, or use chains to prevent the joint from pivoting during transit.

An unsecured articulated joint that pivots during transport creates dynamic shifting of weight, stress on the machine frame, and potential trailer stability issues. Confirm with your SAC coordinator that the carrier understands articulated compactor transport requirements and will verify joint security before departing. This is a critical safety step for this machine category.

Before transport, thoroughly clean asphalt, soil, or debris from the compactor’s drums, undercarriage, and between drum frames. Built-up material adds unnecessary weight, can fall off during highway transit creating road hazards, and may hide pre-existing damage during the condition inspection.

For asphalt rollers coming off paving jobs, allow time for drum cooling and proper cleaning before pickup. For soil compactors, remove caked mud from the undercarriage and drum scrapers. A clean machine loads more efficiently and produces an accurate Bill of Lading condition report. Clean drum surfaces also allow the carrier to properly assess and document any pre-existing wear patterns.

For smooth drum rollers used for asphalt work, take extra care to protect the machined drum surfaces during transport preparation. Document any existing drum wear patterns, scratches, or damage with photos before pickup. While SAC carriers use proper tie-down techniques, having pre-transport documentation protects both parties.

Some operators apply a light coat of release agent or drum protectant before long-distance transport, particularly for rollers with fresh drum surfaces. Discuss any special drum protection concerns with your SAC coordinator at booking. The drums represent a significant portion of the machine’s value – proper attention to surface condition is important.

Before transport, remove or secure any loose components. This includes spray bars, extra drum scrapers, or maintenance tools stored on the machine. For rollers with onboard water spray systems, ensure tanks are either empty or secured against leakage during transit. Clean out the operator platform completely.

For pneumatic tire rollers, check tire pressure and inspect for any damage before transport. Document the condition of all tires for the Bill of Lading. Any removable ballast weights should be secured or removed if appropriate. The compactor should be in clean, transport-ready condition when the carrier arrives.

Before booking, measure your compactor’s overall length, width at the widest drum or tire point, and height to the top of the cab or ROPS. For articulated units, measure in the straight position. Accurate measurements are essential for correct trailer matching and permit assessment. Operating weight is critical for trailer selection.

Provide these dimensions to your SAC coordinator at booking: overall length, overall width at drums or tires, overall height, and operating weight. Inaccurate dimensions that result in the wrong carrier being dispatched can cause loading failures and costly rescheduling. Heavy landfill compactors often have very specific transport requirements that must be documented accurately.

Before the pickup date, confirm that the pickup location has adequate access for a heavy-haul carrier and appropriate conditions for loading a compactor. The site needs firm, level ground capable of supporting the trailer and the machine’s weight. Soft asphalt or unpaved surfaces may not support heavy loading operations.

For non-operational compactors or sites without suitable loading conditions, confirm that a crane or heavy forklift with adequate capacity is available. Landfill sites and remote construction projects often have specific access requirements. Communicate site conditions including surface type and available space to your coordinator so the right carrier with appropriate expectations is dispatched.
