Boom lift transport is a weight and height problem, and the model number tells us both. Compact electric articulating lifts in the 30 to 45 foot class weigh roughly 13,000 to 16,000 pounds and load onto flatbeds or step decks with ramps. Mid-size 60 foot telescopic units run about 20,000 to 25,000 pounds. The big 120 to 135 foot telescopic booms push 40,000 pounds and beyond and usually need a step deck or lowboy to keep total height under the legal 13 feet 6 inches. Because these machines are self-propelled, most load under their own power up ramps, with the boom lowered into the transport cradle, the jib tucked, and the turntable lock engaged before the first chain goes on.
An articulating boom folds its knuckle into a compact package, so overall shipping length stays close to chassis length. A telescopic boom retracts but does not fold, so the stick often overhangs the counterweight and adds real feet to the load. Two lifts with the same platform height can need different trailers for exactly that reason, which is why we quote from the model and serial data, not the category. Booms ride lowered in the cradle with the turntable locked, chained at the frame points the manufacturer specifies, never at the cylinders.
Lower the boom fully into the cradle, retract the stick, center and lock the turntable, and stow or remove the platform if the manufacturer recommends it for transit. Charge but disconnect batteries on electric units, leave about a quarter tank in diesel machines for loading, and hand the keys to the driver or tape them inside the cab guard. Photograph all four sides plus the hour meter and serial plate before pickup.
Most boom lift freight is fleet work: rental houses rebalancing branches, dealers delivering sold units, and contractors moving a lift between projects. Short repositions are often cheapest on a hot shot class truck when the unit is light enough, while multi-unit fleet moves pair machines on the same deck to split the linehaul.
