Backhoe Shipping

Before pickup, confirm that your backhoe is operational and can be safely driven or positioned for loading. Check that the engine starts reliably, hydraulics function properly for both the front loader and rear excavator systems, and the transmission engages smoothly. Verify that tires are properly inflated and have adequate tread for loading operations, or that tracks rotate smoothly on track-equipped units.

Before transport, lower the front loader bucket to the carry position, typically a few inches off the ground with the bucket angled slightly back. Fully retract and curl the rear excavator arm tight against the backhoe frame, with the bucket tucked close to the machine. This minimizes the transport envelope and keeps both the front and rear attachments within legal dimensions.

An improperly positioned front bucket raised high creates height clearance issues and shifts weight distribution. A rear arm left extended increases transport length and creates a hazard. Confirm hydraulic systems hold position without drifting. If cylinders leak down during transit, the transport envelope changes and clearance issues may develop. Your SAC coordinator will confirm the transport dimensions based on your backhoe’s configuration at booking.

If your backhoe is equipped with outrigger stabilizers (the extendable arms used to stabilize the machine during digging operations), ensure they are fully retracted and locked in the transport position before pickup. Outriggers left extended significantly increase transport width and create width violations on most state highways.

Hydraulic outriggers should be retracted and the hydraulic system checked for leaks that could allow them to drift out during transit. Mechanical outriggers should be pinned or locked in the retracted position. Some larger loader backhoes have rear stabilizers that extend well beyond the machine width. These are critical to retract and secure properly before transport.

Before transport, remove or secure any loose attachments or accessories that are not permanently mounted. This includes trenching buckets, hydraulic hammers, auger attachments, or specialty tools that may be mounted on the quick-attach system. Clean out the operator cab or platform and remove any loose tools, debris, or personal items.

For hydraulic attachments with hoses, secure the hoses to prevent damage during transit. Document any attachments that have been removed so they can be reinstalled correctly at delivery. Quick-attach plates should be empty or have only the primary bucket attached and secured. Any loose or removable components that could shift during highway transit should be taken off and shipped separately if appropriate.

Before transport, thoroughly clean the backhoe to remove mud, construction debris, and accumulated material from the bucket, undercarriage, and tracks or tires. Many states have regulations regarding the transport of equipment carrying soil or organic material across state lines. A clean machine also allows the carrier driver to complete an accurate condition inspection.

Check all hydraulic lines, cylinders, and fittings for active leaks before pickup. Hydraulic fluid leaks create slip hazards during loading, can damage trailer decks, and may result in the carrier refusing to load the equipment. Repair known leaks before transport or disclose them to your coordinator in advance. Confirm the fuel tank cap is tight and there are no fuel system leaks.

Before booking, measure your backhoe’s total length with the rear arm fully retracted, width at the widest point (including tires or tracks), and height with the front bucket in the carry position. Accurate measurements are essential for correct trailer matching and permit assessment. Weight is also critical. Operating weight determines trailer selection.

Provide these dimensions to your SAC coordinator at booking: overall length with arm retracted, overall width with outriggers retracted, height with bucket in carry position, and operating weight. Inaccurate dimensions that result in the wrong carrier being dispatched can cause loading failures and costly rescheduling. For backhoes with cabs, include cab height in the overall measurement.

Before the pickup date, confirm that the pickup location has adequate access for a heavy-haul flatbed carrier and appropriate loading conditions. Backhoes are typically driven onto the trailer under their own power, which requires a stable, level loading area and a trailer with an appropriate ramp angle.

For non-operational backhoes or sites without suitable loading areas, confirm that a crane or heavy forklift with adequate capacity is available for loading. Construction sites with soft ground, steep grades, or limited turnaround space can create challenges. Communicate site conditions to your coordinator so the right carrier with appropriate expectations is dispatched. If site access is limited, discuss alternative staging locations.
