The first Europeans to explore what is now Ohio were the French fur traders in the 17th century. After being conquered by the French, Ohio became a British territory after the French and the Indian War in 1754. Founded by French colonists in 1702 as the capital of French Louisiana, Mobile is the oldest city in Alabama.
