The Dutch were the first to settle by the Hudson River in 1624. After two years, they founded the colony of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. The state that is now New Mexico was first colonized by Spain and was included in the Gadsden Purchase in 1853. However, New Mexico did not officially become a state of the United States until 1912. The top-secret Manhattan Project, in which leading American scientists created the first atomic bomb, took place in New Mexico during World War II.
The bomb was tested at the Trinity Bomb site close to Alamogordo in 1945. When a local farmer found unidentifiable debris on his property in 1947, some people in Roswell, New Mexico, began to wonder if there might be extraterrestrial life there. They thought it might be the wreckage of an alien spaceship that had crashed.
