Minnesota, was unified as the 32nd state on May 11, 1858. Nicknamed as the Land of 10,000 Lakes or the North Star State, it is located most northerly of the 48 conterminous U.S. states. On January 3, 1959, Alaska became the 49th state of the United States. Alaska is the largest U.S. state by area and the seventh largest sub national division in the world. Conversely, it is the 3rd least populous and the most sparsely populated of the 50 United States.
It is located northwest extremity of the United States West Coast, just across the Bering Strait from Asia. The Canadian province of British Columbia and the territory of Yukon border the state to the east and southeast.
