Kentucky gained the state honor in 1792, becoming the first U.S. state west of the Appalachian Mountains. The name Montana is derived from the Spanish montaña (“mountain” or “mountainous region”). Montana has a couple of nicknames, although none are official, including “Big Sky Country” and “The Treasure State”, and slogans that include “Land of the Shining Mountains” and more recently “The Last Best Place.” The state capital is Helena and Oro y Plata (“Gold and Silver”) is the state motto.
