Chicago, located on Lake Michigan, and connected to the eastern ports via the Erie Canal became a booming metropolis, and even the fire of 1871 could not stunt its growth. Most of the western border with Missouri and Iowa is the Mississippi River; Kaskaskia is an exclave of Illinois, lying west of the Mississippi and reachable only from Missouri. The state has a northern border with Wisconsin. The northeastern border of Illinois lies in Lake Michigan, within which Illinois shares a water boundary with the state of Michigan, as well as Wisconsin and Indiana. The state capital is Springfield.
Illinois took the nickname Prairie State; Land of Lincoln. The state tree is the White Oak and the state flower is the violet. And the state motto is State Sovereignty, National Union.

The state that is now New Mexico was first colonized by Spain and was included in the Gadsden Purchase in 1853. However, New Mexico did not officially become a state of the United States until 1912. The top-secret Manhattan Project, in which leading American scientists created the first atomic bomb, took place in New Mexico during World War II.
The bomb was tested at the Trinity Bomb site close to Alamogordo in 1945. When a local farmer found unidentifiable debris on his property in 1947, some people in Roswell, New Mexico, began to wonder if there might be extraterrestrial life there. They thought it might be the wreckage of an alien spaceship that had crashed.
