On December 7, 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, and has since been known as “The First State”. Delaware occupies a small niche in the Boston–Washington, D.C., urban corridor along the Middle Atlantic seaboard. It is part of the northeastern portion of the Delmarva Peninsula and some islands and territory within the Delaware River. Kentucky gained the state honor in 1792, becoming the first U.S. state west of the Appalachian Mountains. Frontiersman Daniel Boone was one of Kentucky’s most prominent explorers and many immigrants followed the track he set fire through the Cumberland Gap, known as the Wilderness Road. Kentucky took the side of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Faction was deeply centering the issue, and many Kentucky residents fought for the North, the Unionist. Recognized primarily as an agricultural area into the 20th century, Kentucky is also a major U.S. coal producer and ground of the U.S.military bases Fort Knox and Fort Campbell.
