On December 7, 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, and has since been known as “The First State”. Delaware occupies a small niche in the Boston–Washington, D.C., urban corridor along the Middle Atlantic seaboard. Spanish surveyor Juan Ponce de Leon, who led the first European expedition to Florida in 1513, named the state in complement to Spain’s Easter festivity known as “Pascua Florida,” or Feast of Flowers.
