Named after the Colorado River, the Territory of Colorado was organized on February 28, 1861, and on August 1, 1876, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed Proclamation 230 admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. Currently, Colorado is the 8th largest state in terms of land mass.
Colorado is nicknamed “The Centennial State” because it became a state one century after the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence. Colorado is bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south, Utah to the west, and touches Arizona to the southwest at the Four Corners. Colorado is part of the western and southwestern United States and is one of the Mountain States. Denver is both the capital and most populous city of Colorado. Residents of the state are known as Coloradans, although the antiquated term “Coloradoan” is occasionally used.

In the 18th century, the British and French inhabited Vermont. However, both parties were at loggerheads until the French were defeated in the French and Indian war. After the defeat, Vermont was then relinquished to England. Also, in the course of the American Revolution, Vermont declared independence, distinguishing itself from the original 13 colonies, even though the Continental Congress refused to acknowledge it. Eventually, Vermont was admitted into the union as the 14th state in 1790. This happened 14 years after it had become an independent republic.
The state’s name is derived from the word “Montagne Verte”, which is French for Green Mountain. This name resulted in the state’s nickname “Green Mountain State”. Today, Vermont’s mountains are a popular destination for skiers and snowboarders. It is the country’s foremost producer of maple syrup and is the home to the popular Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.
