Kentucky gained the state honor in 1792, becoming the first U.S. state west of the Appalachian Mountains. Frontiersman Daniel Boone was one of Kentucky’s most prominent explorers and many immigrants followed the track he set fire through the Cumberland Gap, known as the Wilderness Road. Kentucky took the side of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Faction was deeply centering the issue, and many Kentucky residents fought for the North, the Unionist. The state that is now New Mexico was first colonized by Spain and was included in the Gadsden Purchase in 1853. However, New Mexico did not officially become a state of the United States until 1912. The top-secret Manhattan Project, in which leading American scientists created the first atomic bomb, took place in New Mexico during World War II.
The bomb was tested at the Trinity Bomb site close to Alamogordo in 1945. When a local farmer found unidentifiable debris on his property in 1947, some people in Roswell, New Mexico, began to wonder if there might be extraterrestrial life there. They thought it might be the wreckage of an alien spaceship that had crashed.
